A home movie produced by John Scott Forsyth that featuring his wife Joanna, daughter Rosemary and sons Angus and toddler Richard as they move back to the United Kingdom from the United States traveling onboard the RMS Mauretania from New York to Southampton.
At the Cunard Line terminal in New York City a line of cars is parked under an underpass, a man writes something down on the boot of his car. In the distance a cruise ship, believed to be the RMS Queen Elizabeth, is manoeuvred by tugboats towards the dockside next to the terminal building.
A couple look up from the quayside at a family looking down on them from the deck of the RMS Mauretania. Others line the dockside to say their goodbyes to those onboard. A woman follows a small boy as he walks around the deck, other passengers look down on relatives or friends below.
The gangways are removed and a tugboats helps manoeuvre the Mauretania away from the quayside from which large crowds wave their final goodbyes. The RMS Queen Elizabeth is still moored along the other quayside, in the background the New York City skyline. Passengers watch from the deck as the ship cruises through New York Harbour, passing the New York skyline with the Empire State Building in the distance.
On board passengers relax on deckchairs, a woman and small boy walk past couples playing table tennis. A family group gather on deck, a couple sit together on deckchairs while nearby two women sit chatting. At the stern large crowds sit soaking up the sun from their deckchairs
The cruise ship approaches Southampton, a pilot boat comes alongside. The cruise ship comes into harbour where several cargo ships are moored at a nearby terminal. The family looks out from the deck as the ship pulls along another quayside. They watch as the family car is unloaded from the vessel by crane hoisted onto the dockside. They disembark along the gangway getting into their car parked nearby where the film ends.
