Members of Rowntrees department store at Scarborough prepare for the annual Benelux Festival Parade. The theme for 1965 is 'Fiesta Marina'. The main window of the shop displays an automated potter figure advertising a new range of pottery designed in Holland.
The film opens on a busy street scene in Scarborough looking across to the Rowntrees department store.
A change of scene shows members of the Rowntrees team in flamboyant costumes standing at the entrance to a car park. A man nearby films them with a home movie camera. Those in costume chat with members of the public.
The film moves inside the Rowntrees building where two men, one in costume, have a discussion. The man in costume is thought to be Rowntrees promotion manager.
Another man adjusts part of his feathered costume. The promotions manager gathers items from his costume together. One of the girls from the parade poses for the camera in her costume. She sits at a table with others nearby at other tables to have a snack and chat, most have changed to everyday wear.
The film cuts to show a store window display. The display celebrates pottery ware designed in Holland. The centrepiece of the display is a figure of a potter at work creating a pot on a wheel. A sign at the front of the window reads, ‘created in Holland’. People in the street stop to look at the display.
A close view of the potter mannequin shows his hand moving on a slowly rotating pot. Another view shows the mannequin’s colourful orange/red hair and beard.
Inside views follow of one of the store’s departments [quite dark], it is busy with a range of items on display, which seem to be produce from Holland.
The film cuts to a white gloved hand opening a blue bound photograph album. Pages are turned to show pictures of pat parades in which Rowntrees have been involved [blurred].
The film changes back to participants in the Rowntrees parade showing off their costumes, and generally getting ready for the parade in the office and workroom in the store building.
The film then shows the decoration and finishing of the parade float, which includes the red and silver stylised fish model forming the main feature of the float. A woman glues crinkled aluminium foil on the model to create lips on the face of the fish.
Two women test out areas on the model where figures might sit or stand during the parade. General views show the head of the fish, which now looks complete.
Three people who have been working on the model chat amongst themselves while posing for the camera.
The film cuts to a view of the exterior of Rowntrees store where an array of international flags fly from flagpoles attached to the building. The film ends with crowds gathering on the pavements in the nearby street waiting for the parade to go past.
