Members of Rowntrees department store in Scarborough prepare for the annual Benelux Festival Parade. The theme for 1965 is 'Fiesta marina'. Final touches to the outfits is followed by a procession through Scarborough.
The film opens showing a placard resting on some glittering bright red fabric which reads; ‘Fiesta Marina’.
A view follows of a man running out of a workroom office, past the camera then back again. Around the workroom lie bright fabrics and costumes in various stages of completion.
Preparations for the coming parade show participants putting on costumes and make-up in the workroom based in the offices of Rowntrees department store.
One of the female participants poses for the camera in front of a white back drop. Her costume includes a spectacular headdress. A male member of the parade follows on to have his photograph taken others follow for their photographs, many of them pose for the film camera afterwards.
The parade participants then walk out of the store onto the street. They wait on the pavement outside the store, then they get into the back of a waiting Rowntree’s store van. The colourful spectacle attracts many onlookers.
Next, they get out of the van and the view changes to the float which will be on parade. A white box encases a motor vehicle with a cartoon-like representation of a fish on top of it. The costumed participants wait patiently for the next phase in preparations.
Some of those in costume get on to the float which is named ‘Fiesta Marina’ with the Rowntrees logo below the name. While some of the costumed figures sit on the fish, one or two stand next to it, the space around the fish being quite narrow. A woman holds a board up to the camera which reads ‘Jaconelli Trophy Best In The Show’. Judges for the parade have awarded the prize to Rowntrees, the card is displayed on the float.
With crowds gathering round, the parade begins with many of the other costumed figures walking ahead of the float or following on behind. Another card mounted on Rowntrees float states that Local Traders have awarded it second prize. The participants throw confetti from baskets they carry.
Crowds gather on the sea front; the mayor is there holding a trophy. Next to him a woman speaks through a megaphone to the crowds. She then awards the trophy to one of the Rowntrees participants.
The film cuts back to a view of the corner of the Rowntrees store building in the town. The camera moves in close to two advertisements on the corner of the building, one reads ‘Drop into Rowntrees’.
A view from a high angle show crowds gathering on pavements along the street waiting for the parade. Small Dutch flags are handed out to children and adults.
A wind band appears marching down the street, followed by two floats. From upper windows in the Rowntrees building balloons are released, the colourful costumes and float of Rowntrees appears as it goes past the store.
The film moves to street level where a closer view of the dancing parade members can be seen as they walk past the store and crowds in the town centre. From a high angle view show other floats and bands in the parade, including a float from Holland entered by the Volendammer Dance Group.
The film cuts back to the Rowntree entrants as they continue on their way. A placard appears on screen which ends the film, it reads; ‘The last...but not the least! Dutch Festival 1965’
