An amateur film produced by Bryan McIvor featuring musicians and dancers from across Europe parading through Billingham as part of the annual Billingham Folklore Festival. On a stage set up in the town centre troupes of performers take part in traditional routines for the entertainment of the watching crowds
A crowd gathers along The Causeway next to the Billingham Forum leisure centre watching a procession of musicians and dances from around the world parade past. At the front a Salvation Army marching band followed by performers in traditional dress walking or dancing in pairs, one of them carrying their nations flag another carrying a sign that reads ‘Italy’. Behind them come performers from Poland, the men wearing yellow waterproofs and holding one-side of a large fishing net. Next come the performers from Romania, some dancing while other wave at the crowd as they pass. Behind then performances from the Asturias region of Spain followed by those from the Canary Islands, Switzerland, Turkey, Yugoslavia, and Denmark.
The musicians and dancers from Denmark make their way through Billingham town centre, past large crowds onto a stage where they wave at the spectators sitting in elevated seating around them before quickly coming of. Behind them the Italian contingent makes its way onto the stage, dancing as they go, before coming off again to make way for the Polish group.
Crowds on elevated seating look down on an empty stage waiting for a performance to begin. Once again, performer from Switzerland followed by Yugoslavia come onto the stage to the applause of the audience before walking off again. Finally, the musicians and dancers from England make their way onto the platform, several waving at the crowd.
The Swedish contingent made up of an all-female marching band make their way onto the stage and perform a routine for the watching crowds. They finish, walk of the stage, and are replaced by the Polish who perform a dance routine featuring the fishing nets seen previous. Their routine ends and they march of the stage to be replaced by the Spanish who dance enthusiastically around the stage, one of the waving the Spanish flag. Their routine over, a group of Romania musicians come onto the stage to perform, one playing a traditional string instrument known as a dulcimer. Dancers appear and perform along to the music. Their performance ends they leave the stage to be replaced by the Turkish all-male dancers her perform a traditional sword dance known as the Kilic Kalkan dance of Bursa which features both swords and shields. The film ends with a different troupe of dancers performing for the crowd.
