A short comedy film produced by Doug Collender of the Flanders & Swann song ‘The Gasman Cometh’; a satire on the traditional British tradesmen who come to a house to fix one problem only to cause another. Title: The Gasman Cometh Credit: Doug Collender A man in a white lab coat comes along the driveway of a suburban home, he wears a hat in which a tag has been added that reads ‘Gasman’. Inside the house he tosses pieces of skirting boards over his shoulder. A pair of hands dials a telephone. The man in the lab coat once again approaches the house, this time the tag in his hat reads ‘Carpenter’. Inside he picks at dry rot in the joist under the floor. He uses a hammer, and the screen goes blank. By candlelight, a pair of hands looks through a copy of the Yellow Pages. For a third time the man in the lab coat comes along the drive, this time the tag in his hat reads ‘Electrician’. On the doorstep he writes something in a small notebook. The camera shakes looking up at a fuse box changing to a piece of glass shattering on concrete. Again, a pair of hands dials a telephone, this time with a bandage around a finger. Once again, the man in the lab coat comes along the drive, the tag in his hat reading ‘Glazier’. In one hand he holds a blowtorch, the other window putty. Speeded up footage of a windowpane being installed followed by, once again, a hand dials the telephone. The man comes along the drive again for the fifth time, the tag in his hat reading ‘Painter’. A paint brush slaps on a coats of paint to a wall, through an opaque window the man painting over the glass. A copy of the Yellow Pages sits beside the telephone, a hands taps it irritably. The film ends with the Gasman coming back along the drive. End title: The end
