Title: A Tale of Northumbria
Through a grove of trees the battlements of a caste.
A man called Umfraville rides away rides away on horseback along a track beside a field, from the battlements his love Nellie watches him leave. She looks out across the landscape waiting on his return.
Inside the castle Nell’s parents speaks with a servant. Back outside nearby villagers throw stones and vegetables at a witch who is being pulled along a road by her arms which are in stocks. A man sits on the ground, his feet also locked in a pair of stocks.
A statue atop the roof of the castle roof, inside Nellies father walks up and down impatiently, standing beside him a servant adjusts a woman’s dress.
Beside a road leading to a church men and women in various costumes. A man with a long pike holds back the locals as the vicar walks towards the church waving at the crowd. The groom in a red velvet curtain strokes the faces of a number of women standing at the church gate as he goes inside. The locals watch on from behind a wall, amongst them a monk wearing a habit. The wedding party as well as the vicar stands at the church door waiting on Nellie. The monk walks into a wood and removes his habit.
Inside the castle a boar’s head mounted on the wall. A wedding banquet is laid out on a long table, the brides father tries to take a something and the queen slaps his wrist by his wife.
Nellie in her wedding dress one last time head to the roof and looks out across the landscape. A second woman, her cousin, joins her looking out of the surrounding fields and woods. The monk now revealed to be her lost love Umfraville and wearing a long red and white gown comes through trees and waves up at Nellie on the roof. She smiles and waves back as he sneaks away back to his horse which he leads away. Umfraville hide behind a tree as another man comes past. As he passes Umfraville grabs the man’s arm.
Back at the castle Nellies father eats unhappily, on the roof the two women stand with Nellie holding a note that reads ‘I shalle comme – looke for ye broome. Umfraville’. The cousin leaves.
Back inside the castle a servant throws herself at the feet of Nellie parents. Her father throws his arms in the air while giving out orders to the servants. They all head off to look for his daughter.
On the roof a guard looks around for Nellie, from behinds a bush a second guard carrying a pike breaks up a couple kissing. As the man runs away the guard thrusts his pike into the guard and turns towards the woman now standing in the bushes.
The man seen previously being grabbed by Umfraville now appears on the roof and holds out the ‘broome’ of the note to Nellie, she takes it happily. A guard on the ground points up to the bride, on the roof two guards rush over to a woman wearing a veil. One of them pulls it back to reveal the cousin, a deception.
Outside the church door the bride groom is consoled by the vicar. Nellie appears through the bushes beside the castle wall and sneaks away.
Umfraville rides away along a track with a woman, not Nellie, riding with him. On the roof again Nellie looks mournful.
