An amateur film produced by Frank Sterrett of apprentices from ICI Billingham taking part in a 10-day residential ‘Discovery Course’ run by the company at Stubb House near the village of Winston in County Durham. Frank was one of three tutors who worked on this outward bounds course and the film features ‘advanced’ apprentices working to attach and then take down metal railing to a footbridge crossing a stream in woods to the rear of Stubbs House.
Across a small woodland stream, a group of boy’s work to attach a metal railing to a footbridge. A small crowd watches and a metal saw and an acetylene touch are used to weld the railing to the bridge itself.
The railing in place a group of boys lean on it to test its strength, they don’t fall into the water. A man walks along the stream towards the bridge, the boys still standing on it look down on the camera and each begins to comb their hair.
The acetylene touch is used to cut a piece of metal tubing followed by hiking boots walking through the mud on the edge of the stream. Two men helps a third out of the gully beside the bridge.
Two women are seen through a window inside a building, one looks at the camera. Inside Stubb House a number of young men sit on chairs changes to them racing past crossing over the bridge. Once again, the group of boys pose together on the bridge leaning over the railing.
The railing is removed from the bridge and cut with the acetylene touch. The pathway is also removed revealing the supports underneath. Saws and axes are used to chop us wood beside the stream. The film ends on a man standing in a garden at the rear of Stubb House.
