An amateur film produced by Frank Sterrett of apprentices from ICI Billingham taking part in a 10-day residential ‘Discovery Course’ run by the company at Stubb House near the village of Winston in County Durham. Frank was one of three tutors who worked on this outward bounds course and this film shows boys taking part in a sports days in a field and woods near Stubb House featuring a number of athletic events and an obstacle course. In football field next to a road several boys rest beside a set of goal posts, nearby a sprinting race gets underway along a set of marks chalked in the grass. Several other sprint races follow. A line of shirtless boys stands ready to start another race. A man with his arm is the air and the boys get underway running around the track in a longer distance race. A man sits nearby reading. Three competitors run past; one waves his arms in the air. They collapse onto the grass to recover. Several boys take part in the shot put throwing the ball into the air, the sequence is intercut with other boys s taking part in another race. A number of boy attempt the high-jump with some making it across the rope bar, others not. A relay race gets follows with each competitor speeding around the track passing on the baton to his team-mates. The race over the boys stand around chatting, nearby a chalk leader board. Several boys attempt to toss a large tapered pole or caber followed by other throwing a discus. Two women and a man watch from beside one of the goalposts as another relay race gets underway this time with boys having to sprint up and down the track carried a weighted down plastic bag in order to pass it on to his team-mate. A number of other races gets underway changing to a boy shimmying along a rope bridge constructed in some trees as part on an obstacle course. Several boys swing over on a rope landing on a cargo net. More boys climb across the rope bridge and help one-another climb over a wooden wall. At a wooden tower boys climb a ladder to the top before coming down on a rope. On the lawn area beside Stubb House competitors come to a stop at the end on a race while other continue to make their way around the course either attempting to climb over the wooden wall, climb the tower or swing across onto the cargo net. The film ends with the boys along with a couple with child standing or sitting on the grass as a man points out those on the leader board.
