Title: Home Sweet Home
The film opens with a view of a large stone-built house with a rose garden in the foreground. A creeping plant covers some of the stonework near the door and upper windows.
A change of view shows a pathway and garden gate. Beyond is rolling countryside and a stone-built railway viaduct. A woman walking a dog comes through the gate and walks towards the camera. The dog scampers ahead of her as she walks past a small tree and follows a path around the large lawn. The camera shows a view of the extent of the lawn and various shrubs growing nearby.
The film changes to a view of a man walking along the same path with the dog. The film then cuts to two men cutting down one of the young trees in the garden. The tree is felled with assistance of a rope. Some of the twigs and branches are burnt on a bonfire, a man stands near the fire carrying presumably a can of an accelerant, to another throws more debris on the fire. Another tree is cut down, two men work hard with a bow saw sawing through its trunk by hand, another workman watches nearby, the tree eventually falls. Two others rock a small confer tree back and forth as they loosen the soil around its roots with spades. The tree falls and is carried away.
A man and woman plus the small dog seen earlier walk along the garden path carrying food and drink. Another woman walks along by the path carrying a deckchair, another man wheels a barrow with garden tools in it along the path. A man and woman and a young boy in school uniform follow, the boy and the woman carry deck chairs and a man carries a sign which reads, Private Garden No Admittance.
Another man and woman walk along the same route toward the camera. The man smokes a large cigar, the woman wears a smart outfit and carries a posy. Another smartly dressed couple follow, the woman carries a deck chair and the man smokes a cigar and carries white gloves and a walking stick. He doffs his hat as they pass the camera.
The film moves on showing the whole group with the dog standing on a lawn, one of the women uses a spade to dig a small square of turf, the rest of the group applaud. The young woman with the posy presents it to the woman who has cut the turf. She curtsies as she presents the flowers to her. The film cuts to both women admiring the flowers which make up the posy.
Deck chairs are set up and rugs are laid on the lawn as the group prepare for a picnic. Food and drink are handed out, everyone gets some champagne and a toast is made. The schoolboy seen earlier carries a tray of sandwiches to be served round the group. General views follow of the group enjoying themselves in the sunshine.
The film cuts to two workmen putting up a wire net fence, the small dog seen earlier supervises the work. The boy seen earlier, and an older man help with putting a post in the ground that will support the fence.
The camera shows the extent of the fence, then the film cuts to a mechanical shovel preparing the site for building by clearing off the topsoil and other debris. It deposits the soil and debris into a lorry parked nearby.
Workmen with pickaxes dig into the ground near the mechanical shovel and one of the men collects some of the spoil with a spade and deposits into the bucket of the mechanical shovel.
General views show the extent of the cleared site. The film moves on to workmen taking measurements on site. A lorry reverses to pick up more spoil from the mechanical shovel, the lorry then drives away with a full load.
A general view follows showing men working to prepare the site for foundations. A group from the family who own the site look on at the work completed so far. A cement mixer prepares cement for the site, a workman delivers a full wheelbarrow of the material to one of the troughs made for the new foundations.
The next view shows the foundation’s new brickwork. At another part of the site a stonemason prepares a block of stone using a wooden mallet and a chisel. In the background are stacks of prepared stonework.
A workman carries a piece of stone on his shoulder, the film then cuts to a bricklayer seating another piece of stone on top of the brick foundations, another piece of stone is laid nearby. A workman working on another section of wall cuts a smaller piece of stone to fit in with the rest of the wall.
A workman fills a barrow with fresh cement from the mixer. Another worker spreads it out over some aggregate in the foundations which he then tamps down with the edge of a large plank.
Another worker adds more stone to a wall, a while another cuts a piece of stone in half with chisel, then cements in place.
The film moves to the garden as one of the women seen earlier prunes some bushes. She then places some plants in a small round bed in the lawn.
A man cuts another lawn with a petrol mower, he spreads some of the cuttings from the mower onto a flower bed nearby.
The film cuts back to the house as building has now almost reached the first floor, and scaffolding surrounds the house. The stonework looks impressive as the building progresses. A view follows of one of the finely crafted sandstone window frames.
The work moves to the roof where several roof trusses are now in place, a brick layer works on completing a gable end. The film next shows most of the roof trusses in place, while on scaffolding below the roof line bricklayers work on a porch at the front of the house.
Workmen dismantle the scaffolding surrounding the house and is carried away. Gaps in the mortar where some of the poles had been placed are filled in, a small section of scaffolding remains surrounding a chimney.
Slates arrive for the roof; workmen carry individual large slates on their heads and put them in neat stacks near the building. A workman carries a single slate supported on his head and steadied with his hand up to the roof, and another workman puts it into position. He continues to lay the row of slates he’s working on and gradually the slates start to cover the roof.
At ground level, glass is put into the stone window frames. Below ground level men work in trenches building the drainage system, laying, and concreting in pipes. Concrete is poured into the ditches where the pipes run.
At the front of the house a stone wall is built in part of the garden. A general view shows the house almost finished, with building work mainly concentrating on garden features, including building a circular stone wall around a tree and building walls to make garden features or borders.
The season changes with garden work continuing into winter with snow on the ground. A workman tries to shovel soil from the top of a large pile of earth, the work seems to be hampered by the soil being partly frozen. A workman dumps the soil onto a nearby snow covered flower bed, then he goes back to the top of the mound of earth to continue shovelling.
The film moves to another workman laying mortar between slabs of paving on a perimeter path. The same workman is then seen adding some stone blocks to a new wall.
A workman climbs a ladder to mount an electric lamp. He feeds an electric cable through a hole in the stone gable where the lamp is to be mounted. He screws the mounting bracket to the wall from which the lamp will hang; a final view shows the elegant new lamp in place just above the main entrance.
A change of view shows a decorator at an upstairs window painting the window frame. Another paints a hinge mounted on a white door black, he uses a fine brush to paint the finer details. The same painter does more detail painting on the exterior of one of the windows.
A workman is busy in a small trench which runs along part of some new perimeter paving. He takes the spoil from the trench and puts it in a wheelbarrow. The same man then works on a new flower bed which lies behind a new low-level stone wall.
A bright spring day shows a woman in a coat walking along some new paving next to the house with a small dog by her side. A young boy walks across the new paving, followed by several other visitors. A man pushing a wheelbarrow follows the group, he in turn is followed by two men carrying a ladder.
The men with the ladder walk past the main group who gather outside the main entrance. A temporary door is fixed in the front porch as the house is still not finished.
A removal van arrives from James Hoyle & Son of Halifax, the van reverses up a driveway towards the house.
The men drop the tailgate at the rear of the van and prepare to unload it. A removal man carries a small bureau into the house single-handed. A number of removal men carry several items into the new home.
The film cuts to the dog seen earlier and a cat playing in the snow. The dog is then seen on the end of leash being taken for a walk through the snow, the cat wanders off on its own.
The dog, on its own again, runs through the snow as the cat explores.
The film changes to the dog on a leash being walked home to the new house, the cat follows on behind. The dog and its owner enter the house, the cat follows.
The film cuts to a view of snowdrops in a flower bed and crocuses growing in a lawn. The film continues showing a range of healthy plants growing in the new flower beds and in full bloom.
A workman digs in one of the flower beds, and puts the spoil in a wheelbarrow. He adds some peat to the soil from a large sack next to the barrow. He then uses the spade to mix the soil and peat together. He then puts some of the mixture into a hole dug in the flower bed. The next view shows a display of pink and red carnations.
A man and woman walk down a gravelled path past flower beds in a nearby lawn. They walk down the path where they are greeted by a woman, who kisses them both.
A man carries a tray of drinks from the house, and places it on a garden table, which has a parasol above it to shade it from the sun. The two women sit down on garden chairs, to enjoy their drinks, the visitors husband joins them.
A general view of the house shows how the garden has flourished and there is now a creeper covering much of the front of the house. Views follow of some of the spectacularly coloured plants in the garden. There follows views of rain droplets or ice on some of the plant twigs in winter.
A view of grey clouds follows, with wind battering a tree, blue sky appears through gaps in the grey cloud.
The film goes indoors to a kitchen where a woman is sieving flour into a bowl. She adds more ingredients and stirs the mixture. The result is white icing which is spread over the surface of a round cake which appears to be covered in layers of marzipan.
The woman dabs at the icing with the knife she’s been using to spread the mixture, she creates little peaks and troughs on the surface to make it look like snow. She adds a few Christmas decorations.
The film cuts to a man carrying a tray of drinks into a room. He places the drinks on a table, and guests help themselves to a glass. Everyone smiles and chats as they take their drinks. They salute each other with their drinks possibly welcoming in the New Year. Some of the guests raise their glasses to the camera, and the film ends as everyone shakes hands or kisses as the New Year is welcomed.
