An amateur film produced by Bryan McIvor of the annual Easter bonnet parade and competition taking place inside the Empire Social Club on Hope Street, Haverton Hill in 1973. Most of the film captures those in the club enjoying themselves over pints of beer. A parade of women wearing Easter bonnets make their way around the club and on-stage winners are presented with prizes. Two singers perform for the audience who clap or sing along passionately.
On stage at the Empire Social Club a band performs with a man playing a double bass and another plays drums. In front of the stage sit a group of men and women drinking and chatting. Around the room more men and women of various ages enjoy conversations. A man standing in a doorway sees the camera and comically turns the head of the man beside him, several women seated against the wall move in unison to the music being played. All over small tables overflow with half full pint glasses and bottles of beer. Nearly everyone is smiling, a woman waves and nearby a man holding up his pint puckers his lips as if kissing. Two young women kiss the cheek of the young man sitting between them, beside them a young couple kiss passionately.
More beer is drunk while behind the bar two barmaids serve customers. As the camera moves around the room it captures people chatting and drinking with some looking up into the lens. A group around a small table smile at the camera, a young man in the group sticks his fingers up behind the head of the young woman sitting beside him. Everyone is having a good time.
A parade of women wearing variously decorated and colourful Easter bonnets make their way around the club passing friends and family seated at their tables. The audience applaud and on stage an older man presents a prize to the women with the winning bonnets.
Around the room patrons continue to chat, drink and enjoy themselves with many posing for the camera often as groups. A young man puts his arms around the waist of the young woman in front of him and hugs her. Two men at a nearby table raise their pints of beer to the camera.
On stage a female singer performs, the audience listening and applauding when she finishes. A man appears on stage and also sings to the audience some of whom sing and clap along. A man playing an electric keyboard accompanies the singer, a sign underneath the keyboard reads ‘Ernie Wilson and his Music’. A man in the audience waves his arm in the air in time to the music, on stage the singer also waves his arms passionately. The film ends on the audience all singing and jumping around to the music. A couple kiss passionately and an older woman takes out a small electric fan to cool herself.
