A documentary made by former professional cricket player Bill Bowes showing the second half of a cricket test match between Australia and West Indies played in late January 1952. The match, that Australia won by 202 runs, was the test debut of Australian leg spinner Richie Benaud.
The two teams were: Australia - Colin McDonald, George Thomas, Lindsay Hassett, Neil Harvey, Keith Miller, Graeme Hole, Richie Benaud, Ray Lindwall, Doug Ring, Gil Langley, Bill Johnston. West Indies: Allan Rae, Jeffrey Stollmeyer, Clyde Walcott, Everton Weekes, Robert Christiani, Frank Worrell, Gerry Gomez, Denis Atkinson, Sammy Guillen, Sonny Ramadhin, Alf Valentine.
The film opens with a shot of the clock tower that reads half past 12 and the scoreboard that shows that it is a match between Australia and West Indies. Both teams have played their first innings and Australia are shown to be 287-5, with the two batsmen at the crease being Graeme Hole and Richie Benaud, the latter who is yet to score. The batsmen defend against the West Indian spin bowler before hitting a few runs and making the fielders chase the ball.
Clock shows 1.30pm. Scoreboard shows Australia on 307-5.
The players come out after lunch and there is more action from the match.
Scoreboard shows 310-5, and Graeme Hole has reached his half-century. More action follows, and Benaud is caught for 19.
The new ball is signalled by the umpire, and an appeal is turned down. Graeme Hole is bowled for 62 and Australia are 347-7 at 2.10pm.
More action follows and Australia lose their final three wickets. The players walk off and at 3pm the West Indian innings commences with Allan Rae and Jeffrey Stollmeyer. One of the batsmen is hit by a bouncer and shakes his wrist in pain. The clock face shows 3.55pm and it is time for tea.
The players return from tea and the first West Indian wicket falls at 4.30pm, that of Rae for 25. One more wicket falls before the close of play, and West Indies finish the day on 112-2. The next day begins at 11 o'clock and the batsmen walk out once more and a wicket is lost before Stollmeyer reaches his century and takes his cap off in celebration. More wickets fall until West Indies are all out for 213, the final wicket taken by Benaud - his first in test cricket.
The film closes with the players taking the stumps out of the ground and the spectators running onto the pitch to try and get the players' autographs.
