An amateur film produced by James Madden mainly focusing on events and activities of residents of the Lobley Hill suburb of Gateshead during 1981. A garden fete takes place possibly in the grounds of All Saints Hillside Church that features stalls and local juvenile jazz bands performing. The film also features residents visiting Fountains Abbey in North Yorkshire for a community picnic. However, the first part of the film shows various views of Lanercost Priory in Cumbria.
The film opens with views around Lanercost Priory near Brampton in Cumbria. Two lambs stay close to their mother on nearby grassland. Various coloured roses grow on vines in a flowered bed.
In a street, a man sitting at a table sells tickets to four children. A group of adults and children gather on a large lawn with various stalls and attractions set up around the perimeter. A man in a dog collar smiles as he walks by to speak with a woman looking after the ‘Lucky Number’ stall, a small crowd gathers round to purchase tickets.
Three older women sort through a pile of jumbled clothes on a table, a woman sniffs a rose on display in a vase with a number of other rose-filled vases nearby. Children take what looks like sweets from the tongue of a painted cat's face. A number of people hold up umbrellas to fend off the weather as they walk across the lawn, one of the stalls is carried away out of the rain.
The rain abates and a woman smiles as she takes of a plastic headscarf. Members of a juvenile jazz band chat amongst themselves before marching onto the lawn and performing for the crowds. Two young girls watch with interest as the majorette leading the band spins her baton. A younger majorette marches on the spot leading those behind carrying their banner.
A pink rose changes to an ornate iron design above a gate. A group walks along a path as a picnic is organised on the grass near Fountains Abbey not far from Ripon. Sitting in small groups of adults and children, food and drinks are brought out and consumed. The film ends with views of the abbey ruins.
