An amateur film produced by James Madden of a group of boys from Gateshead visiting the Shetland Islands in 1975. While on the island they visit Crofthouse Museum at Dunrossness, watch airplanes and helicopters take off and land at Sumburgh Airport and explore the nearby Jarlshof Prehistoric and Norse Settlement. The final part of the film shows the boys hiking on Unst looking out at Muckle Flugga lighthouse and enjoying sausages and beans on a nearby beach.
On a rocky shoreline, two boys lie on a large boulder looking down into the water below. Another boy comes over to join them. Nearby sitting around a rocky cove a group of boys sit eating sandwiches while a man boils a small kettle on a portable gas stove making mugs of tea which are passed around.
At the Crofthouse Museum, three boys go inside a thatched stone cottage. The group head off across a field and look at a series of water troughs built beside a stream, part of the nearby watermill. Two boys go inside to look at the turning machinery, they come back out and the group talks with two men who take them around the site.
At Sumburgh Airport passengers cross the runway to board a British Airways aircraft. The boys watch as a lorry carrying their luggage makes its way to the airplane. At a nearby hanger, engineers work on a helicopter engine as another British Airways helicopter comes into land and taxis across the runway. Luggage is unloaded and the helicopter takes off and hovers just above the ground. The aircraft seen previously taxis and takes off.
At the nearby Jarlshof Prehistoric and Norse Settlement the boys examine a site map before exploring the site. From a small tower, a man in bright orange waterproofs point out parts of the settlement to the two boys standing with him. The man then walks around the site holding a map, he passes a sign for Broch Tower. He points at a stone wall speaking with a number of boys who follow him. A number of boys climb into a hole.
A van drives along a track towards a sandy beach as the boys, some carrying backpacks, begin a hike. Three boys and a man come out of a hut and the group makes their way along a track leading to a cliff edge, in the distance Muckle Flugga lighthouse. The boys sit along the cliffs looking out at various sea birds flying.
The group makes their way down onto a nearby beach where cans of beans and sausages are opened and cooked on the gas stove. Two men toast each other with mugs of tea before taking a drink. A seal's head bobs out of the water as the food is served. The meal finished they all make their way back up to the top of the cliffs following a guide, some of the party look out towards Muckle Flugga.
The film ends at a small harbour where some of the boys and a man sitting on a seawall fishing.
