Title: Springtime in the Dales
Title: Easter 1973
A map of Wensleydale alongside a compass is followed by a hand flicking through a copy of the 1973 YHA handbook. A series of membership cards cuts to a group of boys in the doorway of a school, one boy putting his YHA membership card into an inside coat pocket. A group of young people sit or stand outside a building.
Title: Motorway ride
A phantom coach ride traveling along the A1 motorway from Gateshead heads south towards Richmond.
Title: Our walk begins at Richmond
A group of boys and girls make their way along a tree-lined track away from town. Two boys check out sheep and lambs in a field. They continue along a road and two of the group pose beside a sign for the village of Marske. On a green verge, they rest watching workmen construct a roof for a new house.
Outside the village they watch a man build a drystone wall beside the road. They look over a stile at a herd of sheep and lambs flocking together on the other side of the wall. The group rest against a drystone wall before continuing on through a field.
A sign points towards Marrick Priory Residential Youth Centre changes to some of the group looking at flowers growing nearby. They continue on their hike stopping to eat their sandwiches before moving onto their accommodation for the night at Grinton Lodge YHA hostel.
Title: A sociable evening at Grinton Lodge
Pages from a number of books change to the group heading out the next day into the countryside walking along the road toward Reeth. On the village green two of the group look at cows in a nearby shed.
Heading out of Reeth a girl finds eggs in a nest in a hedge. Two boys cross through a gap in a dry stone wall as the group continues hiking across the moorland. Someone looks through a pair of binoculars as a military jet aircraft flies overhead. The group approaches another village where a poster on a wall promotes the Kings Head Inn. The group rest outside the inn before moving on.
A pair of hands flick through a number of books relating to the Yorkshire Dales, this is followed by a view of a young woman resting on a bench and a number of boys eating beside a stone wall.
Title: Over Kisdon Fell to Keld Youth Hostel
A map of the area with a ‘You Are Here’ label on it changes to a wooden sign for the Pennine Way. The group continues their hike, but the weather turns and waterproofs are put on. They continue towards the summit of the fell.
Title: Have s break! At 2340ft on Shunner Fell
Packets of the Kit Kat chocolate bar are passed around and consumed. The group pass a country public house and arrive at the hostel at Keld. A man smiles as he removes his hiking boots.
Title: Good morning begins at Deeside House in Dentdale
A window opens looking on to a sunny garden below. The group put on their boots again and head out passing Dent Head Viaduct across which comes a diesel goods train. They continue their hike passing through a farm gate and crossing a shallow stream. Another Pennine Way sign and a man puts on a warm jacket and scarf. Along the side of a wall, snow covers the ground. They continue walking and the first aid kit is brought out for a boy and his blistered foot. A boy and girl chat nearby, suddenly they begin to play-fight. They continue marching through the countryside.
Title: Hawes Youth Hostel provides a homely welcome
The group stands outside the hostel before heading off along a track. Waterproofs are put on as two girls try to catch the rain in their mouths. They march on up a hillside, two resting against a wall beside a number of milk churns.
A brochure for the Askrigg Festival changes to a view of the group standing outside The Kings Arms Hotel on Main Street. They make their way towards St Oswald's Church leaving their backpacks on the church porch. Inside stained glass windows changes to an inscription written on a wall that reads ‘Michael Smith Mechanick. But He that built all things is God. Herbs'.
The group relaxes beside a bus shelter on a country road as a bus arrives. At Aysgarth village green the group walks along a path beside the waterfalls, some walking behind one of the falls.
