This amateur film begins with views of a large crowd watching a crew of firemen performing a rescue on the side of a steep embankment. The remainder of the film shows a group of young people from the Percy Hedley School in Newcastle on a visit to Edinburgh as they walk around Edinburgh Castle and explore the city streets and other tourist attractions.
The film opens showing firemen working on a grassy embankment in Edinburgh attending to an injured person.
A vehicle with an extending ladder is in attendance and waits on the road nearby. On the opposite side of the road, crowds gather to watch proceedings.
A fireman stands at the top of the extending ladder, as it’s maneuvered into position near to where the injured person lies on the embankment. The ladder is extended but the casualty is finally carried by the firemen down the embankment. The ladder isn’t used in the final rescue as the injured party is maneuvered over the perimeter fence by firemen and the ambulance crew then carried over to a waiting ambulance.
The film changes to a view of street names mounted on a stone wall. One reads ‘Royal Mile’ beneath it another reads ‘Castlehill’
A change of scene shows a car park and a brewer’s dray stands stationary. It belongs to the Bass brewing company and has two horses pulling it with two men, one being the driver sitting on a seat on the dray behind the horses.
A view follows of a busy coach and car park with Edinburgh Castle in the background.
A number of children from the school have found a viewpoint overlooking the city. The film shows a high-angle view of the castle from a viewpoint above the car park.
Some members of the school group have found a public telescope to look over the city. The film captures the ornate towers of nearby churches.
The school group gathers on a cobbled street busy with traffic. With members of staff in attendance, the group enters a large stone building.
The film changes to a view of open grassland next to a car park, two boys run towards the camera. The camera moves round to show a ruined building on top of a rocky outcrop.
The film moves on to a parkland area where a number of sculptures are on display, this venue is probably the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art which has a sculpture park.
The school group walk along a path past park benches and stop to have their picture taken. A few of them walk to the edge of a nearby lake or river.
The pupils and staff walk over a small bridge across a lily pond which is in a large greenhouse, most likely at the Royal Botanic Garden in Edinburgh.
More views follow of sculptures set in parkland. Staff and pupils look over a Henry Moore sculpture, some of the group relax on the grass.
A change of view follows as the film shows the famous Forth railway bridge and as the camera moves around its shows its own position which is on a footpath leading across the Forth Road Bridge.
The visitors head off across the bridge, and then from a point across the road bridge, the film shows another view of the Forth Railway bridge. A locomotive crosses it heading south and another crosses heading north.
The view changes to that of the courtyard in an old stone-built building. The pupils explore a walkway similar to a cloister. A view of another courtyard has a grassed area at its centre displaying a stone sculpture.
The view changes to a dark interior view of a museum, probably the National Museum of Scotland with a display of large animals.
The film moves out into Edinburgh streets. A street sign reads, ‘Candlemaker Row’. General views show tall grey stone-built tenements. A group of pupils walks along a pavement ahead of the camera. The group wanders along another street, with the imposing Edinburgh Castle above them.
The view changes to a modern building perhaps a house, where a mini-bus is parked. The holiday group gathers outside. The film cuts to a hilly field and moves on to show a rough track where the school group walks into a forest. A sign points to a public footpath, the destination is indistinct. The track crosses an open field, the group walk towards the camera and carry on across moorland.
A change of scene follows as some of the holidaymakers stand next to a white mini-bus, the sea and beach chalets in the distance. From the top of a cliff, the camera shows the sea running onto the shore. A member of staff carries a box towards a number of school pupils who are waiting at the grassed area just off the beach. The film ends as they all sit down on the grass and enjoy a snack.
