This amateur film shows a camping trip by pupils of Percy Hedley School at a site at Chillingham near Alnwick in Northumberland. The film opens with a static view of a country road. A sign on the grass verge opposite the camera reads’ ‘Chillingham’. A blue mini-bus drives past the sign and follows the road into the distance. A brief view follows of a sign which reads, ‘Chillingham Wild Cattle’ followed by a view of a stone wall and a bend in the road. The view changes, the mini-bus seen earlier moves off along a country road and immediately turns left into a large stone-built gateway. At the campsite, a boy digs amongst some green foliage. Tents have been erected near some trees. Visitors attend to wheelchairs near the entrance of two of the tents. A member of school staff helps a boy into his wheelchair which stands near the opening of one of the tents. Two other boys look out from the open tent flaps of the same tent. Outside the member of staff sits with the boy next to a campfire, other camp members some in scout uniform join them as they all eat a meal. A frying pan sizzles away on a campfire stove. Next to a tree three camp members peel potatoes and wash vegetables. Two boys stand near a tent, in front of which is a two-wheel trailer. General views show a number of tents at the camp with camp members sitting near the fire. A boy walks off with a small pan to get water from a standpipe. More general views follow of the camp as a boy in a wheelchair waves to the camera from his tent. A staff member pushes a boy in his wheelchair to a path amongst nearby trees. Next to some trees, a member of staff washes crockery, another staff member cleans scraps of food off a bowl at a clearing where a boy was seen digging earlier. Two boys swing from a rope attached to the branch of a tree. General views show the trees and vegetation surrounding the camp. A boy checks the security of the guy ropes on a section of one of the tents. One of the male members of staff has a shave, much to the amusement of a boy in a wheelchair who holds a mirror for him. The member of staff places some soap from his shaving brush on the boy’s nose. Various chores take place around the camp; someone tries to dry a towel over the campfire. Another boy struggles as he tries to carry a heavy bucket of water. Some pans are washed and dried on a large trestle table. In an open space near a tree a boy chops wood with an axe. Many housekeeping activities are undertaken under the shelter of trees, as the weather appears to be very poor. A view of the tents shows little activity. A large pot steams on the campfire, a staff member uses a small pan to gather some of its contents. It is most likely hot water which she takes to a trestle table where a number of staff in overcoats and headscarves wash pans and other items. A change of weather as the sun shines and a number of people gather next to some parked cars at the campsite. A general view shows a small number of visitors chatting amongst themselves. A phantom passenger view from a vehicle shows the receding view of a road and, in the distance a single-story building, which looks like a house or a small shop. The view changes to a rough track heading into an open field beyond some trees. A boy closes a large farm gate and runs back to a Land Rover parked in a field where some others sit in the back looking out. The film ends with a general view showing the famous wild white Chillingham cattle grazing in a field.
