Title - Impel 1973. June 2nd -10th
The film opens with a shot of a building wall and has a banner draped over it that reads '73 Exhibition & trade fair'. There is then a street in Doncaster with a hotel called the 'Danum hotel'. In a smart looking room, possibly the hotel, a judge and two women with sash's sit at a table, talking.
The competition for the Impel Queen then takes place; an audience has gathered round the edge of the room to watch as women parade up and down in the centre, with the judges marking scores. The girls wearing multi-coloured dresses and cardigans walk in an orderly line past the camera, before they answer question from a presenter with a microphone. The judges then tally up their scores and a woman wearing a pink dress is crowned the impel queen; she sits on her throne smiling.
The next sequence opens on a street in Doncaster where the Impel parade has just begun; one of the queens sits up front a rolls Royce and is followed by another queen, who rides on the back of a fire engine past the crowds.
There are then shots of a marching band, followed by brightly coloured floats with people in the fancy dress. Some of the floats have banners which include 'Woodfield', 'Into Europe on a Barclaycart', 'Conservation', 'Come to Europe with 18+' and 'Arndale Park at leisure, shop in safety'. Two girls then dance wildly on a back of an open top bus, which sports an 'Impel 73' banner. More floats with Banners follow, including 'Doncaster Karate club', where boys on the float perform some moves and they are followed by a scout marching band.
On another street the parade continues; the crowd are initially shown watching from the pavement as the queen passes again, followed by girls and boys in bright red outfits, who hold a banner that reads 'Emlfield house youth club'.
Floats advertising car and boat dealerships go past, followed by some of the floats that were featured earlier. The filmmaker then captures a tartan marching band, and a float for the 'Royal Air Force Finningley', before several floats go by that advocate keeping your area tidy. The final shots in this sequence show the karate enthusiast performing on the street.
People then walk through a park where several tents have been erected. Kids play on military equipment such as canons and a young boy is shown a machine gun by an older gentleman.
The crowds mill round looking at vehicles that have been parked in the field. A close up of a plaque reads 'Doncaster's last trolley bus. Preserved by the Doncaster Omnibus & light railway society'. There is then a shot of the red trolley and a close up shows the crest of Doncaster. The filmmaker then captures various shots people looking at old fashioned motor cars, and there are close ups of some of the mechanics; there is also traction steam tractor that sits idle.
In a spacious room, many women sit at tables watching as other woman walk between the tables parading the latest fashion trends, and each woman holds a card. A brief shot captures the Impel Queen at a table, watching as models, including a man wearing patterned underwear, prance across the room. The final shots in this sequence show young boys wearing riding outfits taking to the stage, before the audience give a rapturous applause.
An RAF helicopter then flies overhead and a two soldier's fast rope down to the ground. A flare is let off and a man is lifted into the air by the helicopter rope. At night, fire work display is then captured which includes Catherine wheels and a sign that says 'Good night'.
At Doncaster race course people crowd around to watch a marching band. A poster on a wall then reads 'Impel 73 show jumping'. Horses are paraded past the crowds, who stroke them as they go by. There is a long sequence of the show jumping event itself; male and female riders compete by vaulting over jumps of different heights, and there are also shots of the crowd who have turned out to support the riders.
The filmmaker then captures the annual homemade boat race; people unload their rafts and bring them down to the lake. One boat is called 'Itsy Lectric' and two men stand as it moves through the water propelled by an electric revolving paddle. A large crowd has now formed along the banks as more competitors lower their rafts into the still waters. The race gets underway; 'Itsy Lectric' steams ahead of the other boats which are all paddled by hand. The rafts lap up and down, much to the displeasure of some local swans.
Back at Doncaster race course, wicker cages with Doves are piled on top of one another. The birds are released and the Impel queen watches with a suited man who points to the sky.
A large billboard then reads 'Strawberry Island boat club', and there are initially shots of full sized motor boats which are moored on the banks. The filmmaker then captures many shots of people tinkering with their miniature boats, before they are put into the water and drive around via remote controls. The film ends with Views of Doncaster minster taken from several different angles.
