The film opens with an explosion in a mine and an injured miner being carried out by rescue workers.
Title - Your Self Rescuer
Using narration and illustration it is described what the Self Rescuer is made up of and when it should be used. A group of miners then dramatise a situation in which they would need to wear the mask, when potential dangerous gasses are in the coal pit. The narrator explains the safety information over the top, describing that it should never be taken off until in full safety.
Above ground a clear demonstration is given on how a miner should carry his Self Rescuer, and how it should be cared for. There is a diagram of the machine, and parts include: case release, mouthpiece, heat exchanger, hopcalite, drying agent, dust filter, protective case, coarse dust filter, airtight seal, and exhalation valve.
If the safety steps are not followed which have been described, it (dramatises) what could happen to a miner, he might not be able to get out of the pit without help because of the exposure to gasses. This as shown, could be life threatening.
The machines are also always checked, and lab technicians are seen performing different tests on the Self Rescuer.
