The National Coal Board (NCB) Film Unit is one of Britain's most substantial and long-lasting industrial film units. The following is an informative film about the introduction of Strata Control in coal pits.
Using narration and footage from within a coal pit, it explains and shows the system used for Strata control. The pit used in the footage is an experimental one, to analyse and see how effective pit work can happen without actual labour from people, and how much can be left for the machines to do.
Although machinery works alone, it still needs miners to control it both above and below the pit. This is shown through miners resetting the machines when it has broken down in the pit, and a miner controlling the machinery in a control room above ground directing it where to go.
