From the Jowett Car Club collection, this film chronicles the club's fifth annual rally of Jowett Automobiles including famous models such as 'Jupiter' and 'Spirit'. The cars were first built in 1906 by a small engineering firm based in Bradford owned by brothers William and Benjamin Jowett, in 1954 production stopped but these classic cars have not disappeared as they have been entered in both national and international car rallies, many such as this club rally taking place in Yorkshire.
Title-A javelin Production.
Title-International Jowett Rally.
Title-Harrogate 1970.
An opening shot captures many of the pristine Jowett car models that are lined up at the rally ready for inspection by the judges. There are close-up shots showing the detail of the engines, dashboards and wheels.
The car owners polish bumpers and cleaning engine parts; a couple with a baby watch one man working on his car.
All styles and vintages of cars are lined up in the park area. A young toddler is in a buggy and her father is on his knees beside her talking; she waves at the camera. In the exhibition field there are tents pitched, people picnicking on the grass and crowds and judges inspecting the cars.
In one scene there is a sign which reads `Engine Rebuild Session-U Estimate the Time'. Some men take part in the competition and are rebuilding parts of engines; there are close-up shots of it.
A sign in one of the exhibition tents reads: `Jowett Car Club 1923, East Anglian Section'.
Following this is a shot of a photo which shows a `Javelin' car and some other old-style car ads. Another sign in the tent reads `Jowett Car Club 1923, Wessex Group'.
The next scene is mostly shots of the rally in the field. There are visitors, car owners and cars all around. Some men help a policeman to take some road safety poster out of a van.
The Jowett Rally Chairman gives out prizes to the drivers.
There is a blue van parked in the car park and there are some men taking tables and poles out of it and sticking them into stands on the ground.
There is a shot taken of the front of a car that is parked in the field; the name on the car is Cluley. The cameraman can be seen in the reflection in the metal around the grill.
Then there is the usual section of the rally where the drivers take part in car trials; they carefully drive around markers on the ground and reverse into areas of the test site.
Title-The End.
