From the Jowett Car Club collection, this film chronicles the club's second annual rally of Jowett Automobiles including famous models such as 'Jupiter' and 'Spirit'. The cars were first built in 1906 by a small engineering firm based in Bradford owned by brothers William and Benjamin Jowett, in 1954 production stopped but these classic cars have not disappeared as they have been entered in both national and international car rallies, many such as this club rally taking place in Yorkshire.
Title-2nd National RAL car Jowett Club.
Title-Harrogate, June 3rd.
The film opens with a long shot taken from point-of-view of one of the cars as it drives along a road to attend a rally; the shots have been sped up quite a lot. The car pulls into a garage where there is a close-up shot of the driver checking the oil with a dip stick and then filling the tank before the car continues along the journey to the rally.
The camera shows the car going into a large park area where other classic cars have already arrived. A clear long shot captures the different Jowett models neatly lined up in a semi-circle in the exhibition field. Close-ups show the cars in detail such as the clean shiny hub caps and wheels. The camera pans around to gets shots of the busy crowd of car enthusiasts. There are men, women and children walking around looking at the variety of cars on show. Car owners stand around cleaning their cars and talking to the visitors. Some men are under their cars fixing engine parts.
There is a shot taken from above looking down onto the rows of classic cars waiting to be inspected.
The car trials take place in the next scene. Many classic car drivers and their cars are put through their paces driving at speed around flag posts, reversing into spaces and driving off again.
Following this is the presentation of the trophies by the Chairman of the Jowett Car Club. The winning drivers receive their trophies and shake hands.
