This film is from the John Murray collection and was made by the Audio Visual Unit at Leeds University for the Unit of Cancer Research that is based there. The film would have been used as teaching material for both the medical students at the University and for other medical researchers in the field. Through a combination of voiceover, live footage, stills of laboratory slides, animation and diagrams the film takes the viewer through how the cancer is diagnosed and the different ways of treatment both past and present. Technological advancements have allowed the medical profession greater research opportunities to help in the recovery of a cancer if diagnosed in the early stages as once it takes a hold of the patient it tends to quickly spread and the lesions that develop on the spine and pelvis make the prognosis for the patient fatal. An opening close up shows a patient in bed, the camera pulls back to show two doctors discussing his case , and the senior doctor asking the junior doctor what test he thinks that he should do? There is a long and graphic sequence of biopsies on the prostate. One of the doctors discusses the various stages of cancer as he looks at the biopsies that were taken. One of the surgeons looks at a series of x-rays to show how they compare depending on how developed the cancer is. There is a detailed talk given by the biochemist, on how the various treatments actually attack the cancer.
