Title | It's News
The film opens with a newspaper being pushed through a letterbox. A close-up reveals it to be the Halifax Evening Courier, and there is a shot of man reading it in a chair.
The next shot is of the Courier Office, where the editor Mr George Beddoe (who provides the commentary for #2383 Austria) is opening a letter. There are further shots of office workers using typewriters and answering telephone enquiries. The narrator then explains the process by which images are transferred from a photograph to a print copy, and the film shows the various machines and bits of equipment needed for this to happen.
This is followed by shots of the proofreading department and a room where employees are fitting blocks of type into frames before taking an impression of the page. The metal plates on which these impressions are taken are then trimmed and heated so that they can be moulded into semi-cylindrical shapes. They are then cooled and trimmed with a chisel before being loaded onto a printing machine.
The finished papers are then shown being sent to the publishing department on a conveyor belt where they are wrapped and strung. A man loads them into his van and drives them around Halifax where they are collected and put through more letterboxes, thus bringing the film full circle.
