A film in four parts that shows the construction of Gas Holders in Scotland with the steel and iron materials that are made at Newton Chambers factory in Sheffield. It was filmed by a professional unit so involves many advanced shots of the process.
Title - Assembling the tank base plates.
The film opens with a panoramic view of the finished reinforced cement foundations of a 2 mill cu.ft gas holder (the building of which can be seen in part 1), and several workman can be seen walking across it. A large curved piece of metal is dragged to the edge of the foundation by a group of workman moving in unison. The filmmaker then cuts to a workman who is heating rivets in a small portable furnace; once heated he throws the rivets to another workman who knocks it into the foundation with a pneumatic hammer.
Title - 'De Bergue' gap riveting machine.
The filmmaker capture the riveting machine in action as it knocks several rivets into place along the edge of the foundations frame.
Title - Tank side plate's first tier.
A crane has the words 'Newton Chambers contractors Thorncliffe Sheffield' painted on the back. Metal plates are then hoisted into place around the edge of the foundations and hammered into position by workmen. The riveting machine works steadily securing the metal sheets in place.
Title - Lowering tank by means of screwjacks.
An expansive shot shows the gas holder knows has a ring of metal sheets running around the edge. There are then various shots of workman tightening various metal poles.
Title - Tank side plate's second tier.
A lingering pan shows that the second tier of metal plates has been added to the gas holder.
Title - Tank side plates third and fourth tiers.
A wide view of the gas holder shows that third layer has been finished. The filmmaker then captures the final plate being hoisted by a crane into position for the fourth tier.
Title - Checking side plates for level.
From inside the gas holder, a foreman uses a scope of some sort to check the plate levels, while a man stands by the plates holding a measuring stick. The filmmaker then cuts to show another metal plate being hoisted into position.
