This film documents the May Day Celebrations of the Silver Royd Hill Methodist Church, located near Leeds, and the Sunday school fancy dress competition over a number of years in the 1960s. Also included is footage of a local wedding. The film begins with shots of a few children participating in the fancy dress competition. This is followed by the May Queen leaving the church and taking her position on her throne in the wagon. (The film is overexposed at this point.) The parade through the streets begins, and the procession is led by a band. There are a few different floats for the queens, and children in fancy cress follow the Queen. Some of the costumes include nurses, nursery rhyme characters, teddy bears, and jesters. There is a good shot of a boy as a box of Persil washing powder. Alderman Joseph Hiley and his wife arrive to crown the May Queen. There are well-filmed shots as the procession passes, including all the colourful floats. Parents can also be seen walking with their children. Everybody is wearing smart clothes, and the Boys Brigade marching band can also be seen. In the background are Royd Hill shops and houses. A few spectators have gathered to watch the procession as it makes its way down the town streets. The next portion of the film features an air display. Planes fly in formation through the sky. This is followed by a series of shots of gliders on Sutton Bank. The film then returns to the May Day celebrations of 1963. Close ups of children and a different May Queen being crowned. The film follows the colourful wagons. Shots are taken from the pavement and show the passing procession. Children are in fancy dress, and there is a variety of colour costumes on display. Again, the procession is led by the Boys Brigade marching band, and the procession makes its way through the town centre. The next section of the film documents a wedding which takes place at the church. The groom arrives and makes his way into the church. Next, the bride arrives, and she too makes her way into the church. A man holds an umbrella over her as she does so. After the ceremony, the newlyweds pose on the steps of the church. Girl Guides also pose on the steps with them. Sign - May Festival Saturday 11th May, 1968 It is time for the annual May Festival, and the Queen makes her way onto her throne to get ready for the procession. There are shots of the children in fancy dress and a crowd of people who have turned out for the celebrations. Led by the marching band, the procession makes its way through the town streets.
