Title - The Official Opening of the First Building for the University Of Bradford, 11th June 1965
By the First Chancellor, the Rt.Hon. Harold Wilson, OBE, ME
The film begins with the Principal of the new University of Bradford, Dr E g Edwards, Alderman Revis Barber and others waiting on Platform 8 of Bradford Railway station for the arrival of Harold Wilson. The narrator tells of the Institute’s history and how it is to become a University, as they leave the station.
They drive to the Town Hall where Wilson and his wife Mary sign the Visitor’s Book and meet the Mayor, Alderman Jack Wilkinson, his wife, and other civic dignitaries. Mrs Wilson chats with the Lady Mayoress, while Harold Wilson lights his pipe. They then drive to the University’s new 12 story building. While Harold Wilson goes off to discuss the new University, Mary has a tour with the Vice-Chancellor, Mr McKinley, viewing the new language laboratory and the state of the art audio visual aids, before going to the Industrial Pharmacy Department to meet Professor Rosen, and see the tablet-making machine in operation. Following this, it is onto the Physics Dept. where Professor Snare shows Mrs Wilson some of the equipment.
The guests and press assemble in the main foyer for the unveiling of a plaque dated 11 June 1965. Other guests, about 1,000, watch the proceedings in the Great Hall on CCTV installed by the department of Electrical Engineering. In the Great Hall there are speeches by the Principal and Wilson. There are many photographers as Wilson walks to the Great Hall, with a man recording the speeches of the Alderman, the Principal and Wilson on a twin spool tape recorder. The narrator gives a brief outline of the speeches, and some of Wilson’s speech is heard, as he emphasises the work of the institute meeting the needs of industry. Sir Charles Morris, to be the Pro-Chancellor, presents Wilson with a souvenir album of photographs. Afterwards they all mingle with tea and cakes. Mr Wilson is driven off and the film closes showing the opening plaque and the new building.
