Made by Bradford Institute of Technology, this is film of the local Teachers Social Association garden party. It shows families enjoying themselves, playing various games such as ‘Pills for Auntie’, and a cricket match.
The film begins with two men pinning a poster onto a tree advertising the Grand Garden Party, with admission for adults of 1 /-. Stalls are being set up in preparation. One woman sets out second hand books and jars of pickle. Some scouts pitch their tents. Another stall has potted plants and flowers, and there is a ‘Miniature Zoo’. A man arrives at the car park followed by families in cars, and others on foot. At one of the stalls a man rings a bell and another man has a rattle to get attention for the treasure hunt.
A scout flag is hoisted and some women make purchases at one of the stalls. At another stall, contestants have a go at picking up peas with a straw, playing against a stop clock. A group of scouts are placing bets on playing cards, with their money gratefully collected by the man behind the stall who is operating an electrical machine. Adults and children play games at the various stalls. A David Black Ambulance arrives for the British Red Cross Society of Bradford. One small child pushes his own pram.
Following this is action from a local cricket game. Two men stand guard over several crates of beer. A small boy gets ice cream all over his face. There are then some boys and girls having sprint races. A boy gets handed some money to buy a lottery ticket, and a man has a go on the darts. Two women try to get ping pong balls into the mouths of two cartoon women in the game of ‘Pills for Auntie’. A woman has a go on the pea game, and there is a ‘Guess my Age’ for a corgi dog. A boy scout has cut his knee chopping wood, and gets attended to by another scout. Then children visit the pet zoo, with rabbits and guinea pigs. A group of children pose for the camera waving whilst holding their prizes. Those at the raffle stall count the takings, with the prizes of Birds custard and Campbell’s soup. Then the scouts start taking down the tents and down too come the stalls.
