The film begins looking onto the runway at Gatwick Airport where a party from Leeds Cine Club are making a return trip to Dortmund in May 1981. As they board the plane, a 737, some are showing nerves on their first flight. Inside the plane the hostess gives instructions and they take off. Having had on-board drinks, they land at D?sseldorf. Then, an hour away from the airport, they are in Dortmund overlooking the Ruhr Valley.
Title: Alan Abbott and Arthur Steeles Present 'Dortmund Rendezvous'
Outside the Reinoldikirche, the oldest extant church in Dortmund, the Leeds Cine Club meets up with its hosts, the Dortmund Schmalfilm Klub. In the town square a band is playing 'Nice One Cyril' - made famous by the Cockerel Chorus. The organiser, Mannfred Lee (?), of the Dortmund Schmalfilm Klub, provides umbrellas for an escorted tour of the city, beginning with a marching band. They take a ride on a tram out to Leeds Square, Plantz Von Leeds, which has a traditional British red phone box. The Schmalfilm Klub President, Alfred Langor, explains that, it being the first Saturday of the month, all the shops stay open, and hence they go on a shopping expedition, including the leather shop owned by Arthur's daughter and son-in-law. They visit an open market with art stalls and live music.
In the evening they attend a barbeque at the Mannfred's home, and Alfred, on behalf of Leeds Cine Club, thanks the hosts for the party. The next day they are given a guided tour of the Opera House, which had been especially opened for them, and then a bus tour of the city and its environs, including a monument built by Hitler honouring Prussian Generals. In the evening they go to the new headquarters of the Dortmund Schmalfilm Klub, where Alfred, the Schmalfilm Klub President, gives a speech, followed by one given by Arthur Steeles, President of Leeds Cine Club. Both speeches are translated by an on hand translator. Harry Nichols, of Leeds Cine Club, is given a special token for his entertaining jokes and tricks. After a film show featuring film from both clubs, Alfred presents to Arthur more gifts as a token of good will. The next day they visit Westphalen Park in the rain, and go up the high television tower. Then a final trip around Dortmund, and look back, before they depart, and the film comes to an end.
