This is a film made by the Rev. David Simpson of a re-enactment of a battle between the Royalist and the Parliamentary armies, presumably the Battle of Marston Moor in 1644. A DCE Film production Title - The Battle for York The film opens showing large numbers of men in the battle dress of the Roundheads and the Cavaliers marching across a field, followed by a group of women wearing 16th century costume. The Royalist army carry a flag bearing their insignia and the Cross of St George. The foot soldiers carry long pikes and pull a canon, accompanied by marching drummers. After the long line of soldiers of each side marches past a group of Royalist soldiers arrive on horseback. The Roundheads clean their muskets and ready their canons for firing. The two sides take their places ready for battle and both armies march forward with their pikes pointing forward. They engage each other in a mock battle, with guns and canon being fired. Horse riders also enter the fray, and what looks like a Scottish Regiment in kilts (possibly the Scots Covenanters). Several different types of canon are being fired. The foot soldiers engage in close combat fighting and the Scots run around wielding their swords. As the battle commences many lay dead. At the finish they all make their way off again. The End
