Title: The Story of the Queen Mary
The film begins with commercial newsreel footage of the construction and launch of the RMS Queen Mary on Clydeside in 1934. British Movietone reports the visit by King Edward VII to see the ship leave on her maiden voyage from Southampton to New York.
The film changes to amateur footage on a farm where three small children pet and help feed lambs with bottled milk. Two lambs follow a shepherd with a crook, ewes and their lambs make their way along the edge of a dry-stone wall. The shepherd and children follow, sheep and lambs feed from a trough.
In the farmyard a calf resists being lead out of a shed. A second calf, not on a lead, runs around the farmyard.
A group of boys in running kit pose for the camera, behind them a crowd watches. A race gets underway and the boys race along a road on the south-side of the river Tyne at Gateshead. A number of boys run off on a road that has tram tracks, a number of other boys on bicycles race past along the road. At the end of the race two of the boys pose together, one holds a towel to wipe away sweat and two other boys walk past.
Title: Durham
A road sign points towards the city along the A177 heavy with traffic, Durham Cathedral can be seen in the distance. Cars and pedestrians move along North Street passing the Regal Cinema. Crossing the river Wear at Framwellgate bridge the camera moves along Silver Street towards Durham Market Place where a policeman directs traffic from a kiosk.
A boy pushes his bicycle up Owengate towards Palace Green, the cathedral in the background. Around Palace Green views of Durham Castle can be seen, a sign lists the opening times and admission charges. At Bishop Cosin’s Almshouse a Latin inscription is written above the entrance.
A couple walk through the cloisters inside Durham Cathedral. The next view shows a car parked on North Bailey near to the church of St Mary-le-Bow.
[Colour] A view follows from Prebends bridge to the river Wear below, with Framwellgate bridge in the distance and Durham Cathedral surrounded by greenery. The film changes to show Prebends bridge from along the Wear and a couple in a rowing boat on the river.
[B&W] A view follows from a path along next to the Wear to the rear of Palace Green Library above.
[Colour] Views show the courtyard inside the entrance of Durham Castle as three women and a man standing in the doorway of a building. Next Bishop Cosin’s Almshouse on Palace Green followed by seven people standing at the entrance to Durham Cathedral, some attempting to reach the handle of the cathedral's famous Sanctuary Knocker. A view of the entrance to Palace Green Library changes to show rowing boats lined up underneath Elvet Bridge.
The film ends on colourful flower beds and a rockery in the front and rear gardens of a large stone house, a woman comes over to inspect them.
