This home movie produced by Christine Hanley features men at work on Layton House Farm near Sedgefield dipping sheep, ploughing a field and bailing hay. The film also includes a visit to Seahouses where an Amphicar sails around the harbour and also shows views of birds and seals during a visit to the Farne Islands. A holiday to the highlands of Scotland and a phantom car ride through France are included, as well as footage of guests at Christine’s and husband Frederick’s wedding in 1964.
The film opens on a view looking out to the North Sea from Seahouses with the Farne Islands in the distance. Around the harbour an open-top Amphicar sails past, a number of passengers sitting in the backseat.
The film changes to show geese waddling along a cliff edge followed by views of nesting sea birds on the rock face. From a boat travelling towards the Farne Islands additional views show nesting gulls and other bird life including puffins resting on a rock.
A couple walk hand-in-hand along a stony shoreline which looks out onto a rocky outcrop where seabirds congregate. More views follow of seabirds as well as grey geals as they rest on a small rocky island just off shore.
The film cuts to show a series of speeded up views and a bird being held in someone’s hand. A general view of a waterfall follows.
At Layton House Farm two men work to shear sheep. One of the men uses electric clippers while the other a single bow shearer.
In a field a cat plays with a mouse followed by a man using a tractor to plough a field. The film changes to a garden and a man holding a baby owl. The film cuts to water cascading down a waterfall followed by a fast flowing woodland river. A man stands nearby watching. The film changes to show another waterfall this time flowing down a rocky mountain side.
A sign provides the timetable of the SS “Sir Walter Scott” on Loch Katrine in the Trossachs region of Scotland as a boat pulls away from the quayside.
Back at Layton House Farm three men work together to dip sheep by plunging them into a trough. The film cuts to a field where a pair of hands holds a bird followed by views of Chillingham cattle grazing in another field. The film returns again to Layton House Farm where more sheep are being dipped.
General views showing Layton House Farm are followed by hay being bailed in a field by tractor and bailer. Views of a blue-tit being hand fed changes to shows a number of smartly dressed men and women coming out of a building. A man followed by a woman comes out of the building each carrying a tier of a wedding cake.
A brief shot follows of a llama and wolf in separate cages and a man sitting on a bench is followed by a phantom car ride through the French countryside. It passes a road sign that reads ‘Taittinger’, a famous wine and champagne producer near Reims, and a windmill on a distant hill. Views of cattle in a field, a woman standing on a tree lined road is followed by a boat on a canal and a woman opening a lock where the film ends.
