An industrial film shows the UMM Greenside Goliath overhead crane firstly in operation at the UMM Greenside factory at Newton Aycliffe in County Durham followed by men working to weld together sections of the crane. The remainder of the film shows the crane in operation at Sterling Precast in Scotland where it is used to move large pre-cast section from part of the yard to a parked flatbed lorry.
Title: The Greenside Goliath Crane
The film opens showing a modern three-storey office block set back from a road.
The camera goes in closer to a large metal structure which stands in a storage yard to the left of the main building. A metal gate at the yard slides open.
A closer view of the metal structure follows. An operator’s cabin hangs below a gantry at the top of the structure. A hook hangs below this and is lowered to a workman below who grabs it and attaches it to a pallet on the flat bed of a lorry. The lorry is loaded with slabs of concrete or other material. The crane lifts the pallet off the lorry, the lorry moves away leaving the load hanging from the hook on the crane.
The crane moves further along the length of the storage yard.
Title: Manufacture At UMM Greenside Works
Workmen position a metal strut into part of a larger metal structure and it is welded into place.
A spirit level is used to check the position of a cross member in the same structure, a workman welds it into position.
A broader view of the workshop shows similar structures either finished or in the process of manufacture taking up most of the space on the workshop floor, more views of welding follow.
A higher angle view shows another part of the UMM factory, a moving crane moves along the length of the workshop.
Title: ‘Goliaths’ in Service
A close view follows of a drum wound with cable which aids the movement of the crane along its tracks. A general view shows an overhead crane travelling over a factory yard.
The film then shows the crane operator in his cabin. The cabin moves across the upper gantry, from where it is suspended.
At another location a crane moves a large prefabricated concrete section. A company sign mounted on the overhead gantry reads, “Sterling Precast Ltd”.
The operator of the crane at this firm uses a remote-control unit at ground level to operate the crane, as workmen manoeuvre the concrete section into the right position to load onto a lorry.
The operator moves the crane mechanism along the yard to pick another concrete section.
A change of location and material to be lifted follows, this time a special grab mechanism is attached to some sheet metal. Chains are attached to the grab and the workman signals to the operator to start lifting. The sheet of metal is slowly lifted, and the load travels along the gantry.
Returning to Sterling Precast Ltd, a view of the upper gantry shows a board which indicates a weight limit, ‘Greenside SWL – 5 Ton’
The crane moves into position, guided by the operator’s remote control. Cable is reeled out from a drum attached to the crane at point near the rail track, similar to the one seen earlier.
Up at gantry level the film shows the motor used for lifted loads. A view from above shows the next precast section which will be lifted by the crane. The operator at ground level manoeuvres the load along the storage yard with the remote control.
General views follow of the yard and the crane. Another section is loaded on to a waiting lorry.
A fully loaded lorry leaves the yard and passes by the camera. A final view of the crane at the Sterling Precast yard ends the film.
