A promotional film made for the UMM Greenside of their Mini Ranger, a small railway train used in mine. The film shows said miniranger being driven around a trade show at Crystal Palace in London taking delegates on a ride. The final part of the film shows same or similar vehicle being driven around a test track near the company's factory at Newton Aycliffe.
The film opens showing a diamond shaped company logo with the letters UMM displayed on it.
Following on the film shows the site of a trade fair at Crystal Palace in London. The number of national flags at the fair indicate many countries and industries are represented.
A small electric or diesel engine pulls an open passenger carriage on a narrow-gauge railway. On the side of the engine cabin are the words UMM Mini Ranger a special type of engine used to work mainly in underground mines. The passenger carriage is more conventional, but it has a striped awning above to protect passengers from bad weather.
A board mounted above the striped covering reads UMM Greenside, the manufacturer of the engine.
An onboard view follows showing as it moves through the fair the range of trades and industries and the number of different countries with displays at the fair.
The track takes a sharp turn, which the Mini Ranger negotiates with ease. A view of the open backed cabin shows the driver at the controls with several dials on a dashboard in front of him.
The Mini Ranger passes by another or similar passenger carriage seen earlier, but now parked in a grassed area. The Mini Ranger goes on to show more of the trade fair layout.
The train approaches a simple loop in the track to go back along its route through the fair. It stops at a notice which reads: Site Ranger - Terminus for Trains to The Terrace – UMM Greenside.
A general view shows the sign and the display stand and looks beyond to the main area of the fair.
A static view of the Mini Ranger follows with its passenger carriage, a United States flag flies nearby.
A closer view shows the Mini Ranger moving off with passengers in the carriage. It goes round the loop and heads off down the track, past an array of international flags. The film shows several passengers enjoying the ride in the carriage.
A trackside view follows as the Mini Ranger take a bend in the track.
Boards attached to the side of the carriage list the other work the firm UMM Greenside undertake. Their work includes, transports systems, tunnelling, quarry plant, earthmoving, conveyors and screening plant.
The film then shows an on-board view of the driver’s cab. The view forward is impeded by the cramped position within the cabin and a number of control dials on the dashboard which restricts the view forwards.
A trackside view shows the slow-moving Mini Ranger and carriage as it takes a tight curve in the track. The vehicle passes earth moving equipment on display at one of the trade stands. The vehicle then goes round another loop in the track.
A view taken from a distance shows the Mini Ranger moving slowly along the track travelling up an incline in open grassland.
A trackside view follows the vehicle as it heads towards the camera then passes on into the distance.
A change of location follows as a close view of a similar vehicle named the Mini Rover undergoes tests while pulling a carriage at the UMM factory in Newton Aycliffe.
On one of the loops an engineer alters a set of points. The carriage and Mini Rover head down a straight piece of track past some factory buildings. A view follows of the Mini Rover coming around a loop with the new carriage. Similar views follow showing the motor vehicle and carriage going round the loop, the letters UMM clearly visible on the front of the Mini Rover.
The Mini Rover crosses a bridge, then negotiates another loop, this time there is a full set of passengers on the carriage. It comes off the loop and set off down a long parallel track running alongside the track on which the vehicle approached the loop.
An on-board view of the passengers follows, they are sheltered somewhat by a translucent corrugated plastic roof. A rear view of the driver in the cramped cab of the Mini Rover ends the film.
