A recording of a commemoration service taken by the Headmaster of the Royal Grammar School Newcastle for former Chemistry Master Neil Goldie. Following the service Mr Goldie's family unveils a plaque for The Neil Goldie Science & Technology Centre. Title: Neil Goldie – A Celebration – Royal Grammar School – Friday 10 October 2003 [Opening title missing from element no. 35120 copy] The film begins with a still picture of Neil Goldie sitting at a laboratory bench surrounded by students. An experiment is underway with an assembly of apparatus on a nearby bench. The headmaster of the school stands at a lectern and speaks to pupils, staff, family and friends have gathered in the school hall in a memorial tribute to their family member, friend and colleague. The headmaster at the lectern speaks fondly of Neil Goldie and invites the assembly to stand and sing the hymn, ‘Guide Us O Thou Great Redeemer’. A brass band strikes up the tune and those gathered begin to sing. The camera shows overhead views of the people in the hall as well as those on the galleries. After the hymn the headmaster comes back to the lectern and talks about Neil Goldie’s early life using a text that Neil had written himself a few years earlier. The headmaster goes on to speak of how Neil got the job at the Royal Grammar School and his progress and achievements from then. The band play a medley of compositions by John Philip Sousa, in tribute to Neil who also played in a brass band. Another member of staff reminisces about Neil and his early career as a teacher. Another colleague follows on with his reminiscences especially Neil’s passion for sport and having a good time. A number of students gather on stage behind the lectern and conducted by a member of staff, sing ‘Swing Low Sweet Chariot’, members of the assembly join in with the singing. After the song the choir leaves the stage. A student steps up to the lectern and recites a poem and steps down. The assembly stands and the brass band play the opening of the song ‘Jerusalem’. The film picks out individuals in the assembly as they sing. Afterwards a priest stands at the lectern leads the congregation in a thanksgiving prayer for the life of Neil Goldie. The headmaster returns to the lectern and asks everyone to sit. He announces that the science and technology centre in the school will be named after Neil Goldie, and an unveiling ceremony with Neil’s family will take place after the memorial service. The headmaster outlines other events that are happening within in the school after everyone has left the hall. Most of those attending make their way outside where a plaque will be unveiled on the wall of the new science and technology centre. The headmaster speaks about the centre to the guests and Neil’s contribution to its development. Neil’s wife and his mother and son stand next to the plaque. His son Ben unveils the plaque, and the film ends with the picture of Neil and his students which appeared at the beginning of the film.
