A home movie of the wedding of Morris Gregory to Anne Jameson at St Peter’s Church on Princes Street in Bishop Auckland on 18th February 1953 followed by the reception at the King’s Restaurant on Newgate Street. The film was made by the bride’s eldest brother Eric Jameson.
The film opens with a shot of snowdrops growing in a garden.
The groom and best man arrive at St Peter’s Church watched by a small group of well-wishers. Well-dressed guests arrive at the church and make their way inside. Standing at the gates of the church, a small boy looks on inquisitively as more guests arrive.
A bridesmaid in a long dress and a fur cape around her shoulders steps out of a car on Princes Street along with her mother and another bridesmaid. They pose for the camera briefly before going inside.
The father-of-the-bride Andrew Jameson helps his daughter Anne out of the wedding car. They make their way into the church, the bride in white and her veil down. Again, the two pose for a photograph before going inside.
The happy couple come out of the church arm-in-arm following the service. They pose together beside the church wall laughing and smiling. Other members of the wedding party come out and a female photographer poses them all together for official photographs watched by other guests and well-wishers.
As the couple get into the wedding car, a woman throws confetti over them. Two more women rush over and throw some more. A woman smiles at the camera and the bride waves from inside the car.
A plate of food, drinks and flowers are laid out on a table. Wedding guests smoke and chat at tables at the wedding reception taking place at the King’s Restaurant. On the table in front of them a three tiered wedding cake with two carnations side-by-side on the top.
The bride’s hand picks up a glass of wine from the table. The bride and groom sit together, the groom taking a drink from a glass.
The best man makes a speech and the couple get up to cut the wedding cake. The top two tiers of the cake are removed as the guests to continue to smoke and chat happily. The bride’s face is reflected in shiny metal base of the cake stand.
Cigarette smoke hangs heavy in the room as the sunlight streams in from the window. Telegrams are opened and read out. [Dark footage] A photograph of the happy couple posing earlier in the day is presented to them.
The clock on Auckland Castle gate reads 4.43pm as the happy couple, now in civilian clothing, come out of the Jameson's dental practice on Market Place. Once again, as they make their way to the car, confetti is thrown on them. The couple get into the car and the bride’s mother Mary Jameson comes over and kisses her daughter and new son-in-law. The film ends with them driving away along Market Place.
