The film opens with an animated clay or plasticine character of a miner, sitting amongst the pit props of an underground mine. The image cuts to a model of a rat in the mine gnawing through an electric cable. Visual effects show the rat being electrocuted.
The film cuts to an animation studio with accompanying commentary. Two men are working in the studio. One of them adjusts the position of the miner figure seen earlier while the other operates a camera.
Alan Chapman, a former miner, manipulates the figures for a project called ‘Tales from the Pits’. Alan is interviewed on camera and explains how he is learning completely new skills to produce the film.
Animated drawings are shown on screen as examples of other work being done for the project.
Dennis O’Brian is another ex-miner creating content for a film. On camera he explains why the project is important in helping to raise the profile of mining history in the region.
The film goes back to Alan who is working on a light box creating a drawing. Dave Brunskill the professional animator oversees Alan’s work and generally instructs members of the project in animation techniques.
Several animated drawings appear on screen ending the report.
