Amateur home movie compilation, which includes footage of the pond in Swanland Village near Kingston on Hull; a garden party for the Hull Braves Guild held in the Porters Gardens, Swanland; the annual Hull Fair; family at the Humber river front at Ferriby; Sunday School sports; and the filmmaker's bees.
General views of the pond at the centre of Swanland village, west of Kingston upon Hull, and houses such as Mere House and Christ Church chapel surrounding it, children glimpsed in the yard of the Swanland Primary School, a woman in a 1950s frock helping her toddler feed the swan, children strolling through the village at the pond’s edge, the corner grocer’s shop J. Waites & Son. A couple of women walk briskly past another shop. The streets and leafy lanes of the village are quiet. Various styles of houses can be found in the village. The local pub sells Hull Brewery ales as advertised on an exterior sign.
A relaxed garden party takes place for the Hull Braves Guild given by the Porter family at Swanland Hall. A small marquee has been erected. A few people wander around the extensive gardens looking at the flowers, or sit on the benches.
People begin to make their way up Walton Street towards the October Hull Fair. People stop for snacks at Carver’s ‘quality peas and chips’ from Hull market. The lanes of the fair are crowded now, parents holding the hands of younger children at the travelling fairground. People ride on the Chair-o-Plane, a carousel, North East showman John Hoadley’s Hurricane Jets joy stick ride, which debuted at Hull Fair in 1952, the Goosey Gander ride and the Big Wheel towering over the stalls in the background. The fair is now hugely crowded. The crowd is enticed into a freak show and walk by the Frogmen show, featuring genuine naval VC Ian Fraser with a diving demonstration. A woman smiles towards camera (possibly the filmmaker’s wife) holding the hand of a shy boy. The Elizabeth swing boat ride is in motion and kids and their mums enjoy a mini wheel ride. The big wheel looms above the fair. The Helter Skelter ride is also here along with a swan switchback ride for the children.
A man dances on the Humber river front at Ferriby hand-in-hand with two young girls. They clamber on to the bank to sit down, a family picnic in progress further along a riverside path. A boat is pictured out on the wide Humber river estuary. Children are digging on a beach beside the river.
Primary school age children take part in Sunday school sports. Girls practice skipping. Boys and girls play on a see-saw. Children lounge around with a dog on the village recreation ground. Men play bowls on the club green in Swanland. Girls have a wheelbarrow race. A young girl and a boy compete in a slow cycling contest. The children pose for a group portrait. Children practice jumping.
The last shot focuses on the filmmaker’s beehive.
