An amateur film produced by Joe Clark of Pennyfine Films about the rose garden cultivated by a Mr Rhodes in his suburban home at Whickham near Gateshead. As well as him working in his garden the film features his roses in competition by the Whickham Gardeners Association at their annual show taking place in Chase Park in the town in August 1962. Credit: Pennyfine Films presents Title: Mr & Mrs A Rhodes in Title: The Rose Garden Various coloured roses grow in the front garden of a suburban home watched over by an older gentleman; Mr Rhodes. He comes along his garden path and begins digging in the earth with a trowel. The film changes to show Mr Rhodes walking along the road outside his home and turning into his front garden where he begins working with a spade to dig around a rose bush. He then begins checking his bushes and takes a close look at one yellow rose which he holds out for the camera. A series of pencil drawings show how to repair a damaged rose with a cutting from another. Mr Rhodes proceeds to do the same with a rose in his garden. Mr Rhodes sits in a deck chair in his front garden reading a magazine as Mrs Rhodes comes over with a tray of drinks. The two of them enjoy a cup of tea. A magazine to do with roses sits in the deckchair as Mr Rhodes comes over with a bouquet of roses which he gives to his wife. Images of various roses are intercut with that of Mr Rhodes working on the plants spraying them with a water. A poster attached to the Whickham Gardeners Association message board advises their 19th Annual Show taking place in Chase Park in Whickham on the 18th August 1962. A number of a large marquees are set up inside Chase Park with a long queue outside. Inside various displays of roses set up in competition. Outside a brass band performs for the crowds, the conductor waving his baton. A toddler in a pink dress walks towards camera, a number of dignitaries stand beside a table full of various silver trophies and shields. A number of trophies are presented including one to Mr Rhodes where the film ends. End title: The end.
