Title: 9th Northern Centres Rally
A Marshall directs cars and a variety of different caravan models along a track pointing them to different parts of the site. Various signs help with directions including locations for ‘North Lancs’ and ‘North Yorks’.
Vehicles and caravans drive along a track and a female Marshall speaks to the passenger of one car pointing them to their assigned spot while nearby another caravan has been set up and the owners are putting up their awning. Around a small table a number of Marshall’s, including a young boy and girl, discuss progress so far. More caravans arrive and the field fills with caravans, a man rides past on a bicycle. At a standpipe people queue to fill water containers.
At another part of the site people set up deckchairs around a showground on which a Scout marching band is performing. Their performance ends and the crowd applaud before moving off to another part of the site. A large crowd gather around a covered stage on which a man is speaking into a microphone. A second man in mayoral chains appears and also speaks to the crowd who begin applauded when finished.
A policeman speaks with a couple beside a Porto cabin and a number of people gather around an ‘Arts & Crafts’ caravan.
A football match between two teams of young boys gets underway, one team is in black and white stripes similar to Newcastle United. Around the edge of the pitch a large crowd watches on.
At another part of the site a crowd watch a game of volleyball between two teams of women. Nearby a referee sits in a high chair above the net watching over a second game of volleyball this time between teams of men.
Another crowd watch two teams of boys take part in a tug-o-war followed by two teams of men. After the match the one of the teams sits on the ground panting with exhaustion. Another two teams of men take part in a tug-of-war while on another pitch two teams of women play a game of netball all watched by large crowds. A man drops a handkerchief and a race begins with runners taking off around the site. Crowds applauding as each of the competitor’s crosses the finish line.
A Salvation Army Harrogate flag flaps in the wind and on a small stage nearby a crowd watch as a series of small children take part in a fancy dress competition. One small girls is dressed as a cavewoman, another Red Riding Hood. One boy is dresses as a Roman solider waving his sword around. Holding one of their parents hands each of the children walk around the showground watched by the crowds.
A number of older children in fancy dress proceed to parade across the stage, all of them walk in a circle around the showground. One small girl appears to be dresses as either the Queen or Queen Mother and waves her hand in the air in regal fashion.
A man clears away bags of rubbish, a large queue lines up beside an ice cream van. One caravan has been designated for ‘First Aid’ and a number of people look over another which has on display of ice boxes set up outside. A sign warns people not to smoke set up next to a roped off area full of propane bottle. People wonder around a display of modern caravans.
Back on the covered stage seen previously a number of people come on and collect a prize from a woman. A large banner across the top of the stage reads ‘Northern Centres’. Crowds watching proceeding, many are clapping. A young boy and girl come onto the stage and are given a prize.
A man in a suit begins to speak into a microphone and the crowd watching get to their feet. The woman seen previously presenting prizes is given a bouquet. A series of flags set up nearby are lowered slowly.
A montage of images from the film follows including games of volleyball, children taking part in a sack-race and the fancy dress competition. The film ends with cars and caravans leaving the site and those people seen previously on the stage singing and holding hands together.
