A mixture of both amateur and home movie content produced by Doug Collender featuring a man who uses a ‘magic’ pen to travel around various locations around Windermere and Grasmere in the Lake District intercut with home movie footage of a visit to a safari park and the family at home at Ponteland in Northumberland. Passengers onboard a pleasure boat crossing a lake, possibly Windermere in the Lake District, looks out of windows on views of the surrounding landscape. They pass a rowing boat with six young women in it. A man suddenly appears on a railway track before disappearing again. The man walks along the platform of a railway station and picks up a retractable pen laying on the ground. He places it into his jacket pocket before exiting the station and walking along a country road. He comes to a road sign which is blank. Children sit around tables eating party food as their parents watch over them. A group of people stand beside cars, a woman appears to be collecting money from some of them. The cars pull away and form a queue beside a double-decker bus. A young girl in the back of car points at a packet of sweets sitting in the dashboard. Blank At a safari park the driver of the car appears to suck on a sweet, outside a camel walks up to the vehicle. A man and two children walk hand-in-hand along a road towards another animal. A small dog and a man stand on the road as the camel passes, the small dog chases or follows a giraffe which is running in the opposite direction. A safari park Land Rover herd the giraffe back along the road in the opposite direction. A man looks through a fence and the commotion happening on the road and the giraffe running along the road. In another enclosure of pride of lion’s rest on the grass, inside the car the young girl looks out on the lions some of whom are walking around the car. The car follows two elephants who are being led along the road by a keeper. The girl looks at a monkey in a cage, two gazelle and a resting rhino are in another enclosure. A commercial aeroplane is parked in a car park. Blank A family group walk through a gate at the safari park where Pink Flamingo’s and other exotic birds are housed. They walk past an enclosure of goats and look in on other enclosures holding various exotic animals and birds. They walk to towards a stately home and look in on a cage of monkeys. The children spin on a chair ride at a fairground, a girl eats an ice-lolly while a woman drinks a mug of tea. Doug Collender works in his car parking in the driveway of his home at Ponteland, in the garden two young girls do gymnastics. Blank The man seen previously beside the blank road signs opens and looks at a map. He clicks the retractable pen he found earlier causing him to suddenly disappear and re-appear a few feet away. He looks at the pen with confusion before opening the map again and placing the nib on a specific locations. He disappears and re-appears on a hillside overlooking a lake and walks along a path. A car drives along a country road and the man crossings a small stone bridge over a stream. He uses the pen again on the map and the film changes to another location near the lake now overlooking a jetty, a boat is moored beside it. The man appears beside a tree, he turns and quickly steps back from the edge of the drop below him. The sequence is repeated. The man then appears at a different location and again the sequence is repeated. He presses the pen on the map again and he disappears. Blank General views of a well-maintained suburban garden with vegetable patch. A young girl speaks with the person behind the camera and more views of the various plants and vegetables growing there. Two young girls attempt to set up a recliner on the lawn, one of the girls walks past a red VW Beetle parked in the driveway, she has a white cardigan over her face. She strokes a Siamese cat standing at the entrance of a garage, the cat drinks from a bowl of milk. Three girls, one carrying the cat, walk into the back garden of the house. A travelling man appears at the front gate of Dove Cottage in the village of Grasmere and goes inside. General views of the exterior of the cottage and garden before he reappears at the gate and uses the pen to make another location on the map. Again he disappears. The man re-appears on the platform of Keswick railway station and drops the pen. He accidently stands on the pen breaking it. He makes a number of attempts to use the pen on the map, after several attempts he disappears again re-appearing at a new location. He uses the pen again and disappears. The film ends with the map and one of the man’s shoes falling onto the railway platform, the sequence is repeated, and a sign reading ‘Trains to Carlisle’.
