A Tyne Tees Television news magazine feature on fashion with Newcastle-upon-Tyne's modern Civic Centre interiors and exteriors as backdrop, shot by cameraman Ray Jackson. Also showcased is the new Austin Maxi, the last of Sir Alec Issigonis’ designs launched in 1969. The new Civic Centre was opened in 1968.
An Austin Maxi is driven into the forecourt of the new Civic Centre in Newcastle upon Tyne, David Wynne’s huge, bronze River God sculpture high on the west wall of the building. Four women models step out of the car. One poses beside the car dressed in a floppy fedora hat and belted midi dress.
Two of the models appear on the steps to the entrance modelling maxi skirt and matching waistcoat and a pinafore dress with white blouse insert. Both wear their hair styled in buns.
The two other models appear in midi outfits beside the courtyard fountains, David Wynn’s “Swans in Flight” sculpture glimpsed through the spray.
The camera pans down from the Civic Centre tower, crowned with twelve identical stylised seahorse heads, to a blonde-haired model in a light-coloured, buttoned maxi shirt dress.
Back by the fountain, one model twirls in a peasant style spotted and ethnic, Indian pattern frock with cap sleeves and peasant headscarf, whilst the other reclines in a paisley midi dress with tie-string neck.
Inside the grand entrance hall, one model is seated on a sofa as the other poses against one of the marble clad columns in a maxi dress with patchwork pattern skirt and broderie anglaise blouse top. The other woman now stands and models her tartan pattern maxi dress with broderie anglaise trim.
Back outside beside the ornamental pool, the blonde-haired model is in a pant suit with tight, bell-bottomed loon trousers with rear lacing and a matching lace-up jacket.
In the background to Geoffrey Clarke’s aluminium gates at the main entrance, and then beside the pool and David Wynn’s “Swans in Flight” sculpture, the blonde model shows off her dark-coloured casual trouser suit with white contrasting belt.
Now in a light mini-skirt combo, the model gets into the spacious boot of the car as the brunette model watches and the car is driven away, boot door remaining open, the model waving back to her colleague and the camera.
