An amateur film produced by Alan Quinn primarily showing the rural landscape around the river Derwent near Winlaton Mill in Tyne and Wear. Filmed mainly during the winter months the film focuses on water travelling through the landscape both along the Derwent itself as well as a number of tributaries. The film also features an underground locomotive at work at the Clockburn Drift coal mine near Winlaton Mill which closed in 1983.
The film opens in winter showing the fast flowing river Derwent passing through rural Derwentside. Water pours from a drain into the river which passes under a footbridge and over a weir.
General views of the surrounding snowy landscape and footbridge and a public bridleway sign pointing in the direction of Whickham Golf Course.
The film changes to spring or summer and a woodland path following the river Derwent. Water pours from a concrete spout and along a stream. General views follow of the surrounding woodland landscape, some filmed at dusk or dawn. The Column of Liberty at Gibside can be seen in the distance.
Back in winter again a sign reads ‘Blaydon U.D.C. Paddock Hill Wood. Open to Public’. An underground battery powered locomotive pulls a number of coal wagons away from the Clockburn Drift coal mine.
A man walks across a footbridge pushing the snow from the top of the railing. General views show a snowy landscape with a small bridge and water pouring into a stream from a concrete channel. More views follow of the wintery landscape around Derwentside again showing the Column of Liberty at Gibside in the distance.
A snowy road changes to a footpath and a sign for ‘Derwent Walk’ giving distances to Swalwell 3 ½ miles, Ebchester 5 ½ miles and Consett 7 ½ miles. A man walks through the snowy landscape and along a path or bridleway followed by more views of the stream seen previously in the snow with a small bridge.
General views of a street of modern detached houses surrounded by countryside are followed by more landscape views of a snowy rural location and the surrounding area.
An icy country road changes to show houses and building in a village where the film ends.
