An amateur film by Alan Quinn shows a Catholic christening or other religious service taking place inside a home at Sunniside in Gateshead. The service is taken by two Catholic priests and a nun who not only lead the congregation in hymns and prayer but also offer communion. The focus of the service is a baby which is blessed by the more senior priest. Following the service family and friends enjoy food and drink as well as dancing.
The film opens in the living room of a house with a group of people sitting around the room singing a hymn. A Catholic priest wearing vestments sits on the floor beside a second priest also wearing vestments who is playing a guitar, a woman sitting on the sofa nearby holds a baby on her knee.
The priest comes over and blesses the baby, this is followed by view of a nun sitting on the sofa playing a guitar and singing. The priest seen previously playing the guitar plays again and those in the room accompany him in song.
The first priest goes around the room giving communion followed by leading everyone in prayer. A young girl standing by a man who sits on a fold up chair leaves the room. The nun plays her guitar again and sings, those around the room accompany her.
The more senior priests sits on the floor holding the baby while many of the adults stand around him while the second priest removes his vestments. The baby falls asleep in the priests arms and is then seen being held by an older woman sitting on a fold up chair.
The congregation, including the nun, eat cake on plates while they stand around chatting. The older woman seen previously still holds the baby, a younger woman in pink stands beside her laughing and playing with the now wide awake child. A number of cakes are laid out on a table
Outside in the front of a modern semi-detached house four men sit or stand beside a wall drinking beer. A group of women, several holding small children, stand in the back garden chatting. Nearby a young girl plays by herself and is joined by a man holding the baby. They play together, the girl kissing the babies cheek.
Back inside the house a number of adults dance in a line doing the can-can. More dancing follows by some of the younger adults while older family members sit nearby watching, drinking and chatting happily. The film ends with a number of adults looking at the armrest of one of the fold up chairs which has broken.
