An amateur film made by Raymond James Paiton showing members of the Northumbrian Motor Club competing against one and other in a series of against the clock driving tests taking place at Gosforth Park Racecourse in Newcastle. In the second part of the film, believed to be at Wallsend Dene, drivers compete in a trial in which they attempt to drive up a steep incline and along muddy country tracks. An amateur film made by Raymond James Paiton showing members of the Northumbrian Motor Club competing against one and other in a series of against the clock driving tests taking place at Gosforth Park Racecourse in Newcastle. In the second part of the film, believed to be at Wallsend Dene, drivers compete in a trial in which they attempt to drive up a steep incline and along muddy country tracks. Cars featured taking part include Morris Minors, Mini Minors, Ford Anglias as well as more sporting vehicles such as a Triumph Roadster.
The film opens on a view of cars, including a Hillman Husky with people standing along the road that passes Gosforth Park Racecourse. A number of men and boys stand chatting in the road neat to Gosforth House, one man points a toy gun at the camera from his car, an MG Magnette. Another man writes down information on a clipboard. Parked nearby is a sky blue, Austin Devon Pickup truck,with a placard resting against a front wheel that reads ‘Prohibited Area’.
The film cuts to show a Fiat Millecento pulling away at speed. It comes to a stop inside a marked bay and then reverses out again also at speed. Various other vehicles including a Morris Minor Traveller, Fiat 600 and a Ford Anglia also complete the course which has been constructed in the grounds of Gosforth House.
The next manoeuvre involves all of the vehicles seen previous completing a figure-of-eight movement at speed around a number of bollards. Around the edges of the course a crowd watches. A number different vehicles are seen taking part including two Mini Minor’s and a Triumph TR3.
The Triumph TR3 is the first car to seen taking the next test in which it completes a turning circle at speed and pull up alongside a bollard and white mark on the road. Other vehicles follow next including a van and a soft-top Morris Minor followed by a Ford Anglia.
Next, vehicles attempt to travel at speed through a narrow marked gateway without knocking over bollards. The two Mini Minors complete this with easy, other larger vehicles travel at slower speed and with more care.
A crowd of men, women and children stand on the pavement as the Morris Minor completes another course marked out on the road surface. The Ford Anglia follows next with other vehicles, including one of the Mini Minors, coming next.

The film cut to two men standing beside a car parked on a moorland road. Behind them a line of other vehicles parked along the road. Two men smoking cigarettes cuts to a Mini Minor turning off the road onto a track leading up a hillside. Other vehicles seen at Gosforth Park including two Fiat 600's, a Triumph TR3 and the Morris Minor Traveller turn off the road and attempting to reach the top of the hill.
A number of vehicles, including two Ford Anglia’s and a Morris Minor Traveller, have difficulty crossing the muddy verge off the road. A general view showing competitors and cars parking in a field changes to show various vehicles heading off along a track passing a placard reading ‘Start’. As the move off the passengers in some of the soft-top vehicles bob up and down to help with traction along the muddy track. A small crowd watch as more vehicles move off, many of which come to a stop only a few yards away.
The film cuts to show a number of vehicles making a turn along the muddy track, the passengers in the vehicles bobbing up and down. Most don’t make it more than a few yards before coming to a stop. Two boys watch nearby. The film ends on the Fiat 600 attempting to traverse the track and make its way up an include but instead coming to a stop.
