An amateur film made by Raymond James Paiton of the Northumbrian Motor Club driving tests taking place at Gosforth Park in Newcastle in 1960. The film records a large number of cars completing six against the clock tests watched by groups of spectators. Title: N.M.C. Driving Tests 1960 Title: Test 1 The film opens on a dusty track and a Ford Consul Mk 2 reversing and then driving at speed in a circle. A series of other vehicles including a Fiat 600, a Mini Minor, an Austin A40 and two Ford Anglias, a Morris Minor, a Triumph TR3, an Austin Healey Sprite, a Ford Anglia 100E, drive onto the track to complete the same manoeuvre. The film cuts to show larger cars including a Hillman Minx, a Riley 1.5, and a Simca Aronde P60 drive towards a marked out square on the track and reversing into the space. Title: Test 2 Groups of men stand around near to the track talking followed by a couple smiling at the camera. A Morris Minor drives into the test area and reverses back along a white line drawn on the road. Race officials stand at both the front and rear of the car watching as the driver slowly manoeuvres into the correct position. Once finished, the car speeds off and the film cuts to show it reversing into another marked out bay a few metres away. Again, two officials stand either side of the bay area watching the manoeuvre. Once in position the car speeds off. General views follow of other vehicles completing the test, including a Ford Anglia 100E, a Hillman Minx, a Simca Aronde, a Ford Consul, and a Triumph TR3  filmed from a various positions. Title: Test 3 Three men walk out onto the track cutting quickly to a large car, a Simca Aronde P60 with what appears to have a rotating beacon on the roof spinning around the track throwing up a lot of dust into the air. A small crowd nearby watches as the car speeds around two marked out areas in the middle of the track in a figure of eight movement. A Ford Consul tries the same test. At another part of the test and a white Austin Healey Sprite drives up to and carefully drives into a marked out lane cutting to it driving away at speed. Other vehicles, including a Triumph TR3, a number of Fiat 600’s, a Mini, a Ford Anglia, and an Austin A40 also come into the marked area and reverse before speeding away watched by crowds standing in the near distance. Title: Test 4 A Ford Anglia drives a speed around a series of flags in a figure of eight movement.  A Morris Minor drives completes the test second followed by a number of other cars including the Simca Aronde seen previously with a beacon on its roof. Title: Test 5 A crowd watch as a Fiat 600 completes a number of loops of the track at speed before swerving in and out between bollards set up down the middle. Other vehicles follow many of them seen in earlier sequences complete the test. Some of the larger cars, including the one with the beacon on its roof, drive up, stop and reverse at speed throwing up a lot of dust before driving around the looped area. A man lays in the back of an estate car watching the times on a device containing two stop watches. Title: Test 6 A Mini Minor drives up to the starting line, reverses back before speeding off and completing two full turning circles and speeding away. As before a crowd watches from a safe distance. A Ford Anglia comes next and the film ends on a series of other vehicles seen in earlier tests completing the circuit. Title: The end
