A short amateur film by John Martin Jackson recording the crowds and ships taking part in the Cutty Sark Tall Ships’ Race in July 1986. The Polish sail training ship Dar Mlodziezy and the Russian four-masted barque Kruzenshtern are featured docked along the Newcastle quayside being looked over by the crowds of onlookers. The Dar Mlodziezy is also filmed travelling along the river Tyne.
The film opens on a crowd walking past camera cutting to a view looking across to the Tyne Bridge as well as the Newcastle skyline in the distance.
A crowd watches as the Polish sail training ship Dar Mlodziezy making its way slowly up the river Tyne. From the deck members of the crew wave to the crowds lining the quayside.
The film cuts to show the Russian four-masted barque Kruzenshtern docked along the quayside, a number of colourful flags fly along the rigging. A large crowd look over the ship while on board a uniformed crew member looks on. An airplane flies overhead.
Travelling downstream along the Tyne comes a smaller sailing ship. The crew waves from the deck, the name ‘Racer’ is stencilled on a section of canvas hanging over the side of the ship.
A line of flags flutter in the wind from the rigging of the Kruzenshtern. The film cuts to show members of the crew on the deck of a ship, one of them is playing a mouth organ. Another speaks with the captain or other officer.
The film ends on the Dar Mlodziezy turning and then travelling past along the Tyne.
