An amateur film by David Williams of The Gospel Story in Flowers festival taking place inside St Nicholas' Church on Durham's Market Place in July 1996. The film begins with the church being prepared for the festival and the flowers arriving. A sermon is given in the church followed by various views of the many displays of flowers that have all been designed to tells the story of the life, crucifixion and resurrection of Jesus from the St John's Gospel. A musical concert...
An amateur film by David Williams of The Gospel Story in Flowers festival taking place inside St Nicholas' Church on Durham's Market Place in July 1996. The film begins with the church being prepared for the festival and the flowers arriving. A sermon is given in the church followed by various views of the many displays of flowers that have all been designed to tells the story of the life, crucifixion and resurrection of Jesus from the St John's Gospel. A musical concert follows next and a sermon given by Fiona Castle. The film ends on a violin solo with piano accompaniment comes next intercut with more views from around the church.
The film opens on a 19th century watercolour painting of St Nicholas’ Church on Durham Market Place in Durham.

The film cuts to show the entrance to the church on Durham Market Place and a number of people standing outside.
Inside the church, a large banner hangs down from a balcony. It reads ‘The Gospel Story in Flowers: Flower Festival 12-13-14 July’.
General views follow of members of the congregation working to create a number of dioramas around the church. Two men bring in a number of green plants and the woman begins to include various coloured flowers in their work. The sequence ends with chairs having been set up in the main space of the building.
A banner reads ‘St John Gospel’. The church congregation begin to sing a hymn and general views follow showing some of the colourful displays around the church. A second banner reads ‘The Gospel of St John in Flowers’ followed by more views of flower displays. A man stands at a lectern and begins to read from John, Chapter 1, verse 1.
The film changes to show views of the various diorama’s that have been created around the church based on verse from the gospel of St John. With each display featured, a woman reads a passage from the gospel.
Displays featured include John the Baptist speaks to Jesus, The Wedding at Canaan, Jesus and the Women of Samaria, Jesus Feeds the Five Thousand, Jesus the Bread of Life, God’s Work, Jesus the Light of the World, The Blind Receive Sight, Jesus the Good Shepherd, The Death of Lazarus, Jesus Washes the Disciples Feet, Jesus the Way to the Father, I’am the True Vine, A New Commandment, The Betrayal of Jesus, Jesus Sentenced to Death, Jesus is Crucified, The Burial of Jesus, The Resurrection, Jesus Appears to his Disciples and finally The Purpose of this Book.
The film cuts to a man playing a guitar singing the hymn ‘My Peace I Give to You’. Beside him are three women and three men. The men are each playing a different instrument. A woman plays a piano behind him.

A young man gives a violin solo of Louis Armstrong’s ‘What a Wonderful World’ accompanied by the woman in piano. General views of some of the many colourful flower displays around the church accompany the music. A banner hanging above the choir reads ‘Thank You Lord’.
The film ends on pages from the bible open on a lectern display.
