Title: 'The Great Lover' 'Based on the poem by Rupert Brooke and filmed in Kodachrome by John S. Eley.'
A candle flickers, and there is a man in a smoking jacket sitting at a writing desk writing out the poem 'The Great Lover', by Rupert Brooke. He is using a quill pen and ink. With a narrator speaking the words of the poem, the film switches to images that represent these words. It begins with images of streams, hillsides, old ruins and trees in autumn. Then a breakfast table is shown, with tea being poured. Silvery dust falls, water running off stone, and on a table laden with food someone cuts a loaf of bread. The rainbow is shown followed by wood burning, a wet flower, tulips blowing in the breeze. A girl is tucked into bed, her hand stroked on the blanket. The grain of wood is followed a by a girl brushing her hair; then clouds and a steam locomotive. A basin fills with hot water, a fur is stroked and an old jacket is brushed. A hand smoothes out a girl's head of hair, and we see dead leaves and ferns. Flames are followed by water falling into a pool, and excavation in a hill, then two choir boys singing form a hymn book. Two girls play with puppets, and a hand grasps some clothing and unclenches. A steam train passes and waves are gently lapping the shore. Bulbs are planted in the earth, a girl sleeps, rocks, footprints in dew, chestnuts branches being peeled, a pond, a cow walking by a steam, a wood, and trees saluted against the sky. Yellow flowers, swans and autumn leaves. There are more nature images before returning to the man writing as he finishes the poem and signs off, 'Rupert Brooke, Mataiea, 1914'.
