This film by railway enthusiast and filmmaker Chris Lawson looks at railway traffic in the sixties particularly surviving steam traffic which was beginning to give way to diesel and electric power during the last part of the decade.
This film begins showing a multiple line railway track with a steam train approaching. The image is a little blurred at this point. The engine is in green livery and has a nameplate on the smoke box door. The engine is probably the Flying Scotsman, the train passes heading down the cutting.
The film cuts to a British Railways Board notice, which reads 'Withdrawal of Railway Passenger Services' some small print and again in large print 'Milnthorpe, Tebay, Shap' General view follow of railway sidings and rolling stock in a rural setting. Next a cut to a view of a station, possibly disused.
The film cuts again to a view of a water tower, the camera pans left to a rather desolate view of railway track and buildings. A long shot of a steam train follows as it goes over a stone bridge. A number of enthusiasts on a hillside above the track, photograph the passing train which is pulled by 'Flying Scotsman', it speeds off into the distance.
A travelling shot follows taken from inside a car, looking out to the road ahead. From the car a brief shot of a train, then the road traffic ahead. The car continues along the road [very shaky footage and at times overexposed].
The film cuts to misty moorland scene, and a view of the locomotive 'Flying Scotsman' pulling a passenger train. The film cuts to a night shot and a row of lights. The whole image is indistinct at this point, the view cuts to another row of lights (or the same lights from a different angle).
In daylight a small tank engine pulls a couple of passenger coaches on a rural line. The film cuts to the same train approaching the camera along a single track cutting and across a level crossing, then through a station. Indistinct footage ends the film.
