An Amateur film that records some of the remaining steam traffic on Britain's railways in the mid Sixties filmed by railway enthusiast Chris Lawson that includes footage of the ‘Flying Scotsman’.
The film opens with a long distance view of a steam passenger train, travelling along the bottom of a valley. It speeds off towards a curve in the distance.
A low angle trackside view follows showing no. 4472 the Flying Scotsman. A nameplate above the firebox reads 'Scarborough Flyer'. The engine speeds past, and as the camera pans round to follow the train into the distance, a number of steam enthusiasts armed with cameras can be seen at the trackside.
The next view is of the Flying Scotsman travelling along a railway cutting, heading away under a metal bridge. The film cuts to a station platform where the Flying Scotsman is reversing. Young boys watch as the distinctive twin tenders of the 'Scotsman’ negotiates a curve in the track. It then goes past a signal box, the nameplates on the smoke box seen earlier are missing. The boys and other enthusiasts wander along the platform.
The film cuts to show a boy washing or brushing the roof of a car. An indistinct section follows with random views of patterned wallpaper, before returning to the boy, this time pouring water on the vehicle from a small bucket as he continues to wash the car.
The camera cuts to the same boy walking along the top of some lock gates on a canal, he crosses to other side. The film cuts to the boy and a younger boy standing looking into the waters of the canal next to one of the gates. The camera pans right showing a barge going into the lock. The camera dwells on the rear of the vessel as a man steers it, the cabin he's standing behind is decorated with pictures and flamboyant typography. The barge sits in the lock diagonally.
A high angle view follows of the boy seen earlier(?). He looks up to the camera as he stands next to a wall, dead leaves on the ground below. He runs away from the camera. A woman in a yellow raincoat stops him running too far.
The film cuts to a small gauge train pulling passengers in open carriages. They go around a curve amongst some trees. The small boy rides piggy-back on his father's back(?)
The film ends as a small saddle tank engine reverses, pulling two passenger coaches as it travels along an embankment.
